Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>Thirty-two political parties signed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) code of conduct at an event held in Maseru on Wednesday. These parties signed before the Christian Council of Lesotho (CCL) and the media prior to September 29, Local Government Elections.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, IEC Commissioner, Mr. Ts\u2019oeu Petlane said the signing shows the parties\u2019 commitment to free, fair and peaceful elections, saying IEC, therefore, aspires for a process that does not violate others\u2019 rights during the campaigns.<\/p>\n

He said the signed document outlines conduct during elections, expressing hope that the signing before moral leaders \u2013 CCL and the media will go a long way in attaining the intended results.<\/p>\n

Sharing similar sentiments, IEC Chairperson, Mr. Mphasa Mokhochane added that these elections are held six years after 2017, thus giving a year extension due to macro external factors. He said on July 27, 2023 will be an announcement of candidates to contest the upcoming elections. Mr.<\/p>\n

Mokhochane said IEC is aware of youth in different media platforms where they pledge to do all they can to stop these elections, hence urging leaders to lead and educate young people about the importance of elections in a democratic dispensation.<\/p>\n

On behalf of political parties, Democratic Congress Leader, Mr. Mathibeli Mokhothu affirmed the parties\u2019 commitment towards successful implementation of the code, urging IEC to ensure a clean voters list in order to minimise complaints during elections.<\/p>\n

The upcoming Local Government Elections come after almost a year since the October 07, 2022 National Assembly Elections were held and were won by the Revolution for Prosperity (RFP).<\/p>\n
