Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>Prime Minister Thomas Thabane will not abandon the All Basotho Convention (ABC) to form a new party, as doing so would be akin to committing political harakari, his daughter Adv.<\/p>\n

\u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng Hlaele said yesterday.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Public Eye, \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng said although Thabane was impulsive and rather unpredictable, she reckoned he was too tightly glued to the ABC to leave and start something new elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Besides, she said, those surrounding him lacked the chutzpah to brave the political elements and put in the hard work required to form a party. \u201cMaybe it\u2019s wishful thinking.<\/p>\n

But I have a hunch that Ntate Thabane will not let his party go just like that. He is someone who believes that in life you carve your own niche and earn your keep. He\u2019s 80 years old and I don\u2019t see him jumping ship and forming a new political party.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he forms the party, with who? Who has what? You know, when he crossed from the LCD in 2006, he crossed with people who had convictions, besides that they didn\u2019t have much.<\/p>\n

All they had were convictions, strength and grassroots,\u201d \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng says. \u201cBut the people he is with now, they might have a vision. But they don\u2019t have roots and they don\u2019t have a passion.<\/p>\n

Let him cross with some of those people we see today, it will not last for two months. \u201cIt would be very unfortunate because I don\u2019t see strong people among those who can cross with Ntate Thabane.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t see people like Ntate Mafaesa, Ntate Monare and Ntate Maphalla among those people with Ntate Thabane. They don\u2019t have the staying power of the likes of Mafaesa and Monare.<\/p>\n

\u201d She adds: \u201cThose people around Ntate Thabane are lacking in calibre compared to those I have mentioned. It\u2019s unfortunate if it\u2019s true that they have convinced him to abandon his dream. There\u2019s no calibre in there\u201d.<\/p>\n

But she says because Thabane is by nature \u201cas unpredictable as I am\u201d he might surprise many by deciding to \u201cput his foot down and be the Tom we all know\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I know with my father is that it\u2019s a recurring circle and when it ends, it ends.<\/p>\n

When Tom ends we don\u2019t know when he ends, why he ends and what triggers it. But when he decides, no one can stop him. \u201cNtate Mosisili never thought that Ntate Tom would leave LCD.<\/p>\n

People are never aware when Tom has had enough. That\u2019s why they don\u2019t believe it when he finally bursts,\u201d \u2018Mabats\u2019oeneng says. \u201cAnd, Tom does not make any fanfare when leaves.<\/p>\n

He just ups and leaves, when he knows he has entertained something long enough. And people don\u2019t understand when I tell them that. \u201cThey think I am threatening them because I think I know him more than they do.<\/p>\n

Tom will entertain wrong to a point that whoever is doing wrong will start believing they are right. \u201cAnd if I tell you to be careful, you will never understand because that\u2019s when he\u2019ll be dancing with you so much.<\/p>\n

You won\u2019t know that you have passed your sell-by date. \u201d She concludes: \u201cSo when I say I have a hunch, it\u2019s because I know that one day he is going to wake up and surprise many.<\/p>\n

He will not go on radio or hold a rally to make an announcement. \u201cYou guys will be hassling for his attention. He will be asking for the ABC office keys and will ask to see the new NEC.<\/p>\n

He will sit down and talk with them on the way forward and that will be it. It will not be influenced by talks because that\u2019s not his style. \u201cTom hates protracted discussions.<\/p>\n

\u201d Mabats\u2019oeneng, says she is not fighting her father when she represents members of a faction led by deputy leader Prof. Nqosa Mahao which is locked in battle of wits with the premier\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n

The 49-year-old who is married to new All Basotho Convention (ABC)\u2019s disputed Secretary-General Lebohang Hlaele says her relationship with Thabane, 80, has nothing to do with the current political impasse in the ABC.<\/p>\n

This is despite her father firing her husband (his son-in-law) from his cushy post as Minister of Law, Constitutional Affairs and Human Right in February.<\/p>\n

\u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng, who is the elected secretary of her husband\u2019s native Qaqatu ABC constituency in Mohale\u2019s Hoek district, told Public Eye the pair\u2019s relationship is three-pronged: that of a mentor-mentee, father-daughter, and in the context of ABC, leader-activist.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe clearly understand the distinction between the three\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng also believes that despite the factionalism tearing the ruling party apart, exacerbated by a prolonged court case whose core is the fight over control of the 12-year-old party, it\u2019s survival hinges only on \u201cTom (Thabane) becoming the Tom we all know\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing asked why I am fighting my father is wrong because it presupposes hostility.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe use of the word fight presupposes that there is a fight. It is confusing to me because I don\u2019t know in which respect I am fighting him.<\/p>\n

The fact of the matter here is that there\u2019s a litigant who went to court and that litigant asked for my services and I agreed because I was not conflicted in the matter, in the sense that my father is not even a litigant.<\/p>\n

So to say I am fighting him is altogether wrong because he is not part of these proceedings,\u201d \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng says. \u201cI am not even representing Lebohang Hlaele because that\u2019s the premise from which people would look at this situation.<\/p>\n

I am representing \u2019Matebatso Doti and Montoeli Masoetsa from the Lithabaneng constituency. \u201cTo me it\u2019s not a question of sides. It\u2019s as good as asking me why I am representing a criminal and the answer to that question would be that I am a lawyer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not representing a criminal but somebody who has been accused of a crime. It has nothing to do with sides but everything to do with accessing justice for the litigant and representation by a qualified lawyer. \u201d<\/p>\n

\u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng adds she took the case solely as a legal practitioner but since perceptions are hard to kill \u201call one can hope for is to manage them\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne cannot fight perceptions. You can only manage them. You can manage them by having a one-on-one conversation with somebody.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can manage them by having the privilege of a journalist coming to you and hoping that it will reach the public. Some people will read my answer and still stick to their perceptions that I am fighting,\u201d she says. \u201cI am not fighting.<\/p>\n

I wish also that people can stop using the word Likatana (name used to refer to the anti-Thabane faction after he labelled Mahao a rag while addressing his Abia constituency rally weeks ahead of the party\u2019s February 1-2, 2019) because it is shameful considering the calibre of people in that committee, the calibre of their followers and the calibre of our party.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn any litigation there are two sides. People will have perceptions based on that. But the truth of the matter is that I was approached as a legal practitioner and asked to represent a certain litigant.<\/p>\n

\u201cHad the other come and approached me first, who knows? I was approached by these two individuals from the Lithabaneng constituency whose story was similar to other respondents.<\/p>\n

Hence to save the court\u2019s time we decided to deal with the matter as one case, solely for the question of not wasting the court\u2019s time. \u201d \u201cI am a member of the ABC and I would never say I wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I am also the elected secretary of the Qaqatu constituency committee. We don\u2019t appoint people in this party. I ran for a very tough election. \u201cYes, I was opposed and I came out with huge numbers.<\/p>\n

I am very happy that it was a very tough competition which I enjoyed because it makes me better as it allows me to gauge myself. And, this will take you to why I am where I am politically,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng does not take kindly to the warring ABC sides being referred to as factions, adding it creates the impression that the party is split down the middle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like the word factions because it presupposes that there is two ABCs. It\u2019s just two people who have a dispute over something. As far as I know, there are no factions in the ABC,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

According to the premier\u2019s daughter, during the ABC NEC election campaign, the Qaqatu constituency was approached by Mahao\u2019s camp seeking their support and that they made a conscious decision to back them because they believed in their message \u201caside from the fact that no other slate had approached.
\n\u201cLet me give you the history of this. There will always be slates when there\u2019s an election. It\u2019s not new to ABC.<\/p>\n

And during the time of the campaign, the only slate that went to Qaqatu and approached them and asked them to vote for them was the Mahao camp and they made their presentations before the committee.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it was time for us to go to the elections, then the same slate came and made presentations before some of the delegates,\u201d \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng says.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow when we sat as the Qaqatu constituency, we had to decide whether we were going to the elections as a group or as individuals. And, members also raised a pertinent concern that since the campaign started, it had always been that slate (Mahao\u2019s) that came to us.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow then do we vote for people we have not heard? How do we vote for whoever is standing for this position when he has not come to us to seek our support?<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we decided to go with the people we already knew, whose message we also agreed with: their plans and market they sold them to.<\/p>\n

\u201d She continues: \u201cAnd this is how Qaqatu became part of that slate, not anything to do with all this speculation.<\/p>\n

It had also to do with the fact that the Secretary-General came from Qaqatu. He didn\u2019t just become SG because he chose to. We degelated him as the constituency. He didn\u2019t just wake up and demand to become SG. We approached him and also went to neighbouring constituencies to start selling the message. \u201d<\/p>\n

Hence, she adds, it was imperative that people should learn to divorce her legal profession from her political activism and identify with her as the Qaqatu constituency secretary.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, coming from Lehakoe, taking off my bibs and whatever I wear to court, and putting on my yellow ABC regalia, then I am perpetuating the message that Qaqatu sent me as the secretary.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will understand then that as Qaqatu we align with the outcome of the conference, not with individuals.<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s not about the people we voted for, because if it was about the slate, then we\u2019d be dissatisfied with the outcome of the conference. But now it\u2019s no longer about Qaqatu but about what the people of ABC have said,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did hold a meeting as the Qaqatu constituency after the conference, where we interrogated what was going on and what our stance was.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople were happy that they had voted and said they were content with the outcome although it didn\u2019t come out exactly the way they would have wanted.<\/p>\n

But we agreed that we had to bow to the will of the people, especially when the SG came from our constituency. \u201d While it confuses her that people consider her to be on the warpath, \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng notes that she believes in the truth and in telling it like it is.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a very direct person who tells it like it is. When I do something, there has to be a purpose for which I am doing it.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor instance, on May 1, 2019, we are holding a rally in the Qaqatu constituency because our SG, our former candidate, is also a trade unionist hence we decided to go there and celebrate with him on the day \u2018to say here\u2019s our man\u2019,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Asked if the situation in the party has had an adverse effect on her relations with her father, she says their relationship is \u201cstill very much intact\u201d, although they had grown apart a bit after getting married to their respective spouses \u201cat around the same time\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have three relationships with my father. I have a relationship where he\u2019s my father.<\/p>\n

We have a relationship where he is my leader and another relationship where he\u2019s my mentor. Those relationships are intertwined but distinct. They, in rare moments, come together,\u201d Hlaele says.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the early days of the LCD when he noticed that I liked following him around, he made it clear that when we were at rallies, he was my Abia constituency MP.<\/p>\n

\u201cI carried that with me over the years.<\/p>\n

For instance, if we are at a rally and I start addressing him as my father, what does it say about the people we\u2019re with? That I have a better privilege to this person? He is only my father when we are in private space.<\/p>\n

So, it\u2019s not that difficult for us to make that distinction when we interact. \u201d \u201cSo, that father-daughter thing now had somebody interfering with his love.<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s not the same type of love. \u201cOn the other hand, he gets married and we no longer have those day-to-day one-to-one conversations. Well, we still do but they are not as intense because I have my family now and he has his.<\/p>\n

And you know how it is with new families,\u201d \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng says. \u201cBut I can still pick up the phone and call him, ask after his health. I try not to bother him about the case because he is not a litigant and all that.<\/p>\n

Why should we talk about a case that\u2019s before the courts? He might utter something which I could use against him in court. And our training is such that we know when to talk about what and why?\u201d<\/p>\n

There has been mounting speculation that this week\u2019s announcement that the Court of Appeal will not convene for its April 2019 session on Monday next week as had been previously scheduled, is as a result of the ABC infighting.<\/p>\n

critics say the pro-Thabane side engineered the apex court\u2019s woes fearing that if they lost their case in the High Court, the apex could rule in favour of Mahao\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n

However, asked what her take is on the apex court\u2019s suspension, \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng refrains from responding on the basis that \u201cthat mandate has been left to the Law Society of Lesotho\u201d to \u201csay what our views are\u201d.<\/p>\n

Despite fears that any court outcome could result in an ABC split and subsequent collapse of government, as already expressed by Thabane and Mahao while addressing their different rallies, \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng remains optimistic that Thabane can still bring the situation under control.<\/p>\n

According to \u2019Mabats\u2019oeneng, she does not see a seasoned politician like Thabane, who has worked hard to build the ABC from scratch, \u201callowing his party to just split like that\u201d adding \u201cI don\u2019t even see him jumping ship to form another political party\u201d.<\/p>\n
