Africa-Press<\/a> – Lesotho<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Many compare a career in the police service to a long walk in the mountains, hiking, walking through nature as a recreational activity. This may be so to those officers with sedentary occupations; who may not be aware that hiking is a natural exercise that promotes physical fitness, is economical and convenient, and requires no special equipment.<\/p>\n

And because hikers can walk as far as they want, there is no physical strain unless they walk among hills or mountains. Those organisations that encourage hiking and preserve footpaths, bridle paths, and rights of way in parklands and recognised open spaces in areas of natural beauty against the encroachment of builders, local authorities, and national undertakings help hikers.<\/p>\n

The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) is one of these very few organisations. The LMPS Hiking Club was established in 2019 and it is a non-profit entity joined by both police and civilians who like nature and adventure.<\/p>\n

The club has selected Thabana-li-\u2018mele as its home away from home, and the village, according to the club, is one of the many disadvantaged communities within Lesotho.<\/p>\n

Each year during the national independence celebrations the police hiking club hosts members in this place in collaboration with the community for an annual hiking and camping event.<\/p>\n

Club secretary, Thabiso Thaanyane, told Life&Style in an interview that in their hiking tours of Thabana-li-\u2018mele each household is given food parcels that includes maize-meal and cooking oil.<\/p>\n

Thaanyane said the community also benefits by providing hikers with blankets, food (breakfast and dinner), bedding and means to bath. The villagers also transport hikers\u2019 camping gear with donkeys and horses and in that way \u201cthe community gets an opportunity to raise funds.<\/p>\n

\u201d Thaanyane further noted that this year\u2019s hiking event will be the third held successfully, supported by hiking clubs that include Earth Lovers, Thabana-Ntlenyana Adventures, She Hikers, Healthy Lifestyle Hikers and friends.<\/p>\n

This year, the event is scheduled for October 1 to 3 and is also meant to boost livelihoods of the Thabana-li-\u2018mele community, strengthen police relationship with communities and to deter crime.<\/p>\n

The hike will begin at Nyakosoba, an 18km walk up to Thabana-li-\u2018mele. \u201cAlso, the purpose of the event is to give earth lovers exposure to admire the beauty of Thabana-li-\u2018mele and to view some parts of Lesotho,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
