Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>In efforts to address the electricity supply across the country, the \u2018Muela Hydropower station is set to shut down for six months from October this year.<\/p>\n

This was said by the Minister of Energy, Prof. Nqosa Mahao in a press conference held in Maseru on Wednesday. The aim of the press conference was for the ministry to reveal its programme on electrification projects across the country.<\/p>\n

Prof. Mahao said the purpose of closing down the station is to continue with the maintenance and repairs of the machinery and equipment which is believed to be outdated.<\/p>\n

He added that the government through the Ministry of Energy is on a mission to improve and increase the supply of electricity in the country, saying there will be an establishment of two power plants at Ha Ramarothole, which are aimed at increasing the country\u2019s electricity production by at least 80 megawatts in 2025.<\/p>\n

Prof. Mahao added that with several initiatives, the ministry is also aiming at ensuring that the Qacha\u2019s Nek and Mokhotlong districts which are currently getting electricity supply from South Africa get full electricity supply from Lesotho.<\/p>\n

He therefore showed that upon the implementation of such initiatives, there will be a shortage in the supply of electricity within such areas.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, he mentioned that the ministry is also aiming at establishing about 10 mini grits which are aimed at addressing the supply of electricity in the highland districts.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Minister revealed that the ministry has completed and submitted the Energy Bill which he said is now before the Cabinet, saying this will enable the ministry on matters of production, supply and regulation of electricity within the country.<\/p>\n

Currently, the production of electricity in Lesotho stands at slightly over 100 megawatts and the country imports more supply from South Africa and Mozambique to cater for the estimated 160-200 megawatts demand of the country.<\/p>\n
