Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>Mapitso Ramokotjo, right, a student at Leqele High School, is this year\u2019s top student in the Lesotho General Course of Secondary Education (LGCSE) exams.<\/p>\n

A beaming Ramokotjo told thepost yesterday that \u201chard work\u201d had finally paid off and her dream of studying medicine was now within reach. Ramokotjo said if it had not been because of her dedication and commitment to work, she could not have made it.<\/p>\n

At all material times, Mokotjo said she was always in the company of her books. \u201cEverywhere I went, I would carry a book with me. Even in bed I was sleeping with my books next to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

At times, she would have conflicts with her mother as she could not even assist her with the household chores. \u201cMost of the time my mother was always shouting at me,\u201d Mokotjo said, adding that her mother would complain that she was not helping her with household chores because she was always reading.<\/p>\n

She said if she did not study hard and prayed, she could not have achieved what she did. Ramokotjo said she wants to study medicine to help save lives.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the official release of the results, Education Minister Professor Ntoi Rapapa said he was happy with the overall performance this year.<\/p>\n

He said there has been a significant improvement in the results this year as compared to last year\u2019s. Professor Rapapa said they had however picked up that the students who perform well in the LGCSE exams are struggling at tertiary level.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey underperform and this is worrisome,\u201d he said. He said it is time to make a follow up on these students so that they do not feel neglected.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is time that history be written that we make follow ups on their educational lives,\u201d Professor Rapapa said. This is the first time that students wrote the school-leaving exams 11 years after the phasing out of Grade 12.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am pleased to announce that the students have performed well as compared to last year,\u201d Professor Rapapa said. For those who did not perform well, Professor Rapapa said they still have a chance to do better.<\/p>\n

Mafeteng district has performed far better than all the districts in the 2023 results while Quthing scored the lowest results. The other districts that performed well are Qacha\u2019s Nek, Leribe, Thaba-Tseka and Maseru respectively.<\/p>\n
