{"id":63778,"date":"2025-11-04T18:29:45","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T18:29:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/g20-taskforce-calls-for-global-panel-on-inequality-emergency"},"modified":"2025-11-04T19:34:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T19:34:13","slug":"g20-taskforce-calls-for-global-panel-on-inequality-emergency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/g20-taskforce-calls-for-global-panel-on-inequality-emergency","title":{"rendered":"G20 Taskforce Calls for Global Panel on Inequality Emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>A G20 taskforce established by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for the creation of an international panel to tackle inequality, warning that extreme wealth disparities disrupt democracy and cause economic instability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world understands that we have a climate emergency; it\u2019s time we recognise that we face an inequality emergency too,\u201d said Joseph Stiglitz, who heads the Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality.<\/p>\n<p>The committee\u2019s report \u2013 commissioned as part of South Africa\u2019s G20 presidency \u2013 found that the richest 1% of the global population captured 41% of new wealth since the year 2000.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the poorest 50% increased their wealth by only 1%, according to data from the World Inequality Lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t just unfair and undermining societal cohesion \u2013 it\u2019s a problem for our economy and our politics too,\u201d added Stiglitz, a Nobel prize-winning economist.<\/p>\n<p>The taskforce said in a statement that a new panel on inequality should be modelled after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It would be responsible for monitoring the causes and impacts of inequality, and providing insights to governments and policymakers.<\/p>\n<p>Its report also warned that 83% of all countries, accounting for 90% of the world\u2019s population, meet the World Bank\u2019s definition of inequality and that countries with high inequality are more likely to experience democratic decline.<\/p>\n<p>The authors cited a \u201cperfect storm\u201d of global shocks such as COVID-19, the war in Ukraine and trade disputes, for worsening poverty and inequality.
