Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>Prices for beef meat continue to rise in the country due to high demand as importation of livestock and unprocessed meat from South Africa was banned in the country.<\/p>\n

The above was banned due to foot and mouth disease outbreak which was reported in some South African provinces in September this year.<\/p>\n

Speaking in an interview with the Agency, Consumer Protection Association President Mr. Nkareng Letsie said another contributing factor to increased prices for beef meat is deteriorating local supply as the country produces Nguni cattle which takes time to grow.<\/p>\n

He added that the country does not have enough market for beef meat hence deteriorating local supply, indicating that the majority of consumers are now relying on chicken as it is not expensive.<\/p>\n

He further encouraged the public to cook beef meat regardless of where it was imported from as some traders are importing it from other countries.<\/p>\n

Also interviewed was the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition Chief Information Officer Mr. Lereko Masopha who said the government through the Ministry has since banned importation of livestock and unprocessed meat from South Africa, saying traders are importing from Namibia and Botswana.<\/p>\n
