Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>The Prime Minister (PM) Dr. Moeketsi Majoro led the sod turning ceremony for the construction of the new Senate chamber and offices at the new parliament grounds on Monday.<\/p>\n

The execution was witnessed by the President of the Senate Dr. Mamonaheng Mokitimi, the Minister of Public Works Hon. Lebohang Monaheng, the former PM Dr.<\/p>\n

Pakalitha Mosisili and Hon. Monyane Moleleki. Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony Dr. Majoro indicated that the construction of the new Senate chambers and offices will<\/p>\n

take three years to complete and is estimated to fetch a total of M209 million. He said 300 people will be employed during the process. The PM noted that this<\/p>\n

initiative was pioneered by the previous government led by Dr. Mosisili in 2012, he said by then the budget was M70 million. Majoro said that he is delighted<\/p>\n

that the two houses will be together though it will be after three years of completion. For her part Mokitimi stated that the initiative of the construction is now over ten years.<\/p>\n

She said the initiative came across extreme challenges that led to courts of laws. She appreciated the leadership of the Senate, those that came before them and all those who worked hard to<\/p>\n

ensure that the initiative is accomplished, saying for her it is a dream come true. She extended that the construction of the Senate will respond to a lot of challenges like the safety of the members, place for<\/p>\n

working, the building that was impossible to renovate, the building that made it impossible to use of technology (social media) which is mostly needed since<\/p>\n

the advent of Covid-19 pandemic. \u201cLately the house could not accommodate media people and other visitors interested in listening because we had to keep<\/p>\n

distant due to the pandemic,\u201d she stated. Mokitimi appreciated that the Senate building shall be of international standard, adding that it will also respond to the vision of Basotho in future.<\/p>\n
