{"id":64461,"date":"2025-11-22T18:10:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T18:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/china-warns-citizens-of-mining-slave-risks-in-car"},"modified":"2025-11-22T19:02:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T19:02:39","slug":"china-warns-citizens-of-mining-slave-risks-in-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/china-warns-citizens-of-mining-slave-risks-in-car","title":{"rendered":"China Warns Citizens of Mining Slave Risks in CAR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>China\u2019s embassy in the Central African Republic (CAR) has warned its citizens risk becoming \u201cmining slaves\u201d in the politically unstable nation\u2019s gold trade, as Chinese workers look to sub-Saharan Africa as jobs in the Asian giant\u2019s gig economy dry up.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese nationals have been killed or kidnapped by armed groups and even their supposed business partners, while others were scammed out of large sums of money and deported for illegally mining, the embassy said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Workers from China have streamed into resource-rich sub-Saharan Africa chasing their fortune, as gold prices surge amid large-scale Chinese state-backed buying while jobs in China\u2019s construction sites and factories evaporate as the world\u2019s second-largest economy slows.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the Central African Republic, the nearby Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana and Mali have become hotbeds of illegal mining, driven by lax regulation and weak enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChinese citizens engaged in gold mining operations in the Central African Republic face significant security risks,\u201d the embassy in Bangui said, warning that it had received reports of nationals having their documents confiscated, turning them into \u201cmining slaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The embassy did not say how many Chinese nationals had sought work in CAR\u2019s illegal mines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome were attacked and killed amid rampant anti-government militia activity, others were tragically ambushed after becoming entangled in conflicts between different forces and countries, and some succumbed to fatal illnesses like malignant malaria,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOthers met violent endings through staged accidents like \u2018car crashes\u2019 or \u2018hangings\u2019 following disputes with fellow shareholders,\u201d the embassy warned.<\/p>\n<p>The Central African Republic\u2019s embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>CAR has been in a state of civil conflict for more than a decade and is among the poorest countries in the world, but has abundant reserves of gold, diamonds and oil.<\/p>\n<p>China, which has lent the country more than $26 million, rarely comments on other nations\u2019 affairs \u2014 a principle of non-interference analysts say is largely aimed at safeguarding its economic interests overseas.<\/p>\n<p>That said, Beijing in recent years has stepped up its public diplomacy on protecting Chinese nationals overseas.<\/p>\n<p>One of China\u2019s highest-grossing films, Wolf Warrior 2, centers on a former Chinese special forces soldier rescuing Chinese workers in a war-torn African country, ending with an image of a Chinese passport and the message: \u201cDon\u2019t give up if you run into danger abroad.
