Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong> <\/span>Lesotho and South Africa on Tuesday commemorated the Maseru Massacre at a ceremony hosted by the transformation resource centre (TRC). This day is commemorated to honour the victims, recognise their contribution to South Africa\u2019s freedom struggle and serve as a reminder of the brutality of the apartheid era.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, South African High Commissioner to Lesotho Mrs. Constance Seoposengwe said the two nations remain bound by shared history, sacrifice and a common vision for peace and development. She paid tribute to the people of Lesotho for the crucial role they played in sheltering South African Liberation fighters during apartheid noting that the support came at a cost.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Seoposengwe recalled events of December 09, 1982, when the apartheid regime launched a deadly raid in Maseru killing several people. She described the incident as a reminder of the price Basotho paid for standing in solidarity with South Africa\u2019s liberation movements.<\/p>\n

She mentioned that Lesotho is not the neighbour to South Africa but a second home as the two counties share deep cultural, historical, and family ties. She stressed that in the area of democracy, both governments must continue to strengthen the cooperation in governance, economic development, education, and infrastructure for the mutual benefit of their people.<\/p>\n
