{"id":65946,"date":"2026-01-02T19:16:27","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T19:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/lumpy-skin-disease-reported-in-lesotho"},"modified":"2026-01-02T19:49:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T19:49:31","slug":"lumpy-skin-disease-reported-in-lesotho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/lumpy-skin-disease-reported-in-lesotho","title":{"rendered":"Lumpy Skin Disease Reported in Lesotho"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho. <\/strong> <\/span>The Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr. Thabo Mofosi warned the nation of lumpy skin disease outbreak, which has been reported at some areas in the districts of Leribe, Maseru, Botha-Bothe, Mafeteng and Quthing.<\/p>\n<p>In his statement, Mr. Mofosi said the disease primarily infects cattle and water buffaloes, saying it is caused by a virus, which is spread by mosquitoes from one infected animal to another as well as through direct contact although chances of infection are low.<\/p>\n<p>He indicated that due to heat and moisture during this period of the year, mosquitoes produce more and spread diseases, mentioning symptoms of lumpy skin disease such as skin lumps, salivary secretions, fever and swelling amongst others.<\/p>\n<p>However, he stated that there is no specific cure for this disease as it\u2019s a viral infection but could be treated by medication which boosts the immune system.<\/p>\n<p>He therefore urged farmers to isolate infected cattle from others, adding that those infected should be kept in shaded environments, be given food and water and should not be used for any form of work.<\/p>\n<p>He further warned farmers to report infected cattle at Ministry offices and private veterinary clinics when they see symptoms, saying treatment for this disease is charged normal price as the Ministry only incur costs for rabies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Ministry intends to work jointly with other stakeholders to combat this disease and will remain alert,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the Ministry is working tirelessly to combat foot and mouth disease which was earlier reported in South Africa (SA) and has since banned importation of livestock and unprocessed meat from SA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-article-footer-note\">Find more news and analyses on <span class=\"ap-highlight-country\">Lesotho<\/span> on the <span class=\"ap-highlight-brand\">Africa Press<\/span> website<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho.
