{"id":66641,"date":"2026-02-10T20:43:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T20:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/lesotho-to-participate-in-au-executive-council-meeting"},"modified":"2026-02-10T21:24:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T21:24:13","slug":"lesotho-to-participate-in-au-executive-council-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/lesotho\/all-news\/lesotho-to-participate-in-au-executive-council-meeting","title":{"rendered":"LESOTHO TO PARTICIPATE IN AU EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho. <\/strong> <\/span>The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Mr Lejone Mpotjoana is expected to lead a delegation from Lesotho to attend the 48th African Union (AU) Executive Council Meeting scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from February 11th to 12th.<\/p>\n<p>The Executive Council will bring together Ministers of Foreign Affairs and senior officials from across the continent to deliberate on key political, peace and security, institutional reform and development issues ahead of the forthcoming AU Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Ambassador Nts\u2019iuoa Sekete underscored the importance of the Executive Council meeting for both the continent and Lesotho.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Executive Council provides a critical platform for Member States to translate continental commitments into concrete, implementable decisions and Lesotho approaches this Session with a strong commitment to peace, institutional integrity, and a financially sustainable African Union that delivers tangible benefits to its people, as well as an ambition to play a bigger role in continental peace matters,\u201d said Ambassador Sekete.<\/p>\n<p>She further highlighted Lesotho\u2019s continued advocacy on social development and human capital priorities, particularly child survival and nutrition. Ms.<\/p>\n<p>Sekete added that Lesotho remains steadfast in advancing Africa\u2019s child survival and nutrition agenda, championed by His Majesty King Letsie III, saying that these Executive Council discussions are an important step in ensuring that our collective policies are aligned with real impact on the lives of African children and communities.<\/p>\n<p>Among the key issues to be discussed are progress in the implementation of African Union institutional reforms, including the financing of the Union, decision-making processes, governance, and accountability measures.<\/p>\n<p>The Council will also consider peace and security developments on the continent, with a focus on conflict prevention, peace support operations, and the Silencing the Guns agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Further deliberations will cover Africa\u2019s global engagement and multilateral cooperation, including the African Union\u2019s participation in international fora, as well as social development priorities such as health, child survival and nutrition, in line with Agenda 2063 and the AU Themes of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>While in Addis Ababa, the Foreign Affairs Minister is expected to engage with his counterparts and African Union leadership on matters of mutual interest, reaffirming Lesotho\u2019s commitment to African unity, multilateralism, and the effective implementation of decisions adopted by the Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-article-footer-note\">Find more news and analyses on <span class=\"ap-highlight-country\">Lesotho<\/span> on the <span class=\"ap-highlight-brand\">Africa Press<\/span> website<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Lesotho.
