Lesotho’s Parliament commemorated its historical roots during Parliament Day, celebrating 200 years of nationhood. The event, held at Kopunyane caves, aimed to enhance public understanding of Parliament’s role in democracy and included speeches from key political figures emphasizing representation and accountability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong> <\/span>As the country continues to celebrate 200 years of nationhood, the Parliament of Lesotho reflected on its roots whereby the<\/p>\n

Current and Former Members of Parliament convened to celebrate Parliament Day at Kopunyane caves in Botha Bothe.<\/p>\n

The Parliamentary Service Day, which commenced with a historic lecture at Kopu and Kopunyane caves was intended to promote public awareness, understanding and appreciation of the role of Parliament in democracy.<\/p>\n

It also created a platform for Parliament to engage citizens and reflect on its historical evolution and reaffirm its commitment to public participation, transparency and accountability.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the event, the Speaker of the National Assembly Mr Tlohang Sekhamane said the service day was commemorated at Botha Bothe to bring Parliament to the people, presenting briefly the history of Parliament which was established in Kopunyane.<\/p>\n

He emphasized need for Senators and Members of National Assembly to know their roots, reminding them of their responsibilities.<\/p>\n

He mentioned such responsibilities as representation, legislation, oversight, budget appropriation and advocacy as some of them, saying the event served as a revival and energizer to Senators and MPs.<\/p>\n

The Vice President of the Senate Mr. Tsukutlane Au commended Mr. Sekhamane for the initiative, saying the event marked history as the Parliament reflected on its roots.<\/p>\n

He urged the attendees to take an opportunity and reflect on Basotho\u2019s culture; challenges faced along Parliament journey and instill patriotism.<\/p>\n

UNDP Representative Dr. Jacqueline Olweya said Lesotho\u2019s history aligns with the United Nations concept of peace and security, humanitarian, democracy, gender dynamics, governance as well as women and youth empowerment amongst others, expressing pride for witnessing Lesotho\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

The Principal Chief of Botha-Bothe Mr Rets\u2019elisitsoe Mopeli expressed hope that the day will be commemorated annually at the district.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Qalo constituency MP Mr. Dada Jooma expressed pride over the Parliament decision to mark the event in Botha-Bothe calling for protection and development of the area.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the event, which was attended by political veterans who include the Former Prime Minister Mr. Pakalitha Mosisili, Adv. Kelebone Maope, Mr. Sephiri Motanyane, Mr. Mpho Malie and Mr. Lesao Lehohla culminated with presentation of stationery to schools and Chiefs as well as sports activities.<\/p>\n

The Agency has learnt that amongst other activities that marked 200 years of Basotho\u2019s existence and 58th independence were held and led by King Letsie III at Mopeli Plateu and Kopa caves<\/p>\n

Honourable Members had a full day of appreciating originality of Parliament to the modern-day bicameral Westminster version of today.<\/p>\n

Lesotho has a rich political history, with its Parliament established to represent the interests of its citizens. Over the years, it has evolved from traditional governance structures to a modern bicameral system, reflecting the country’s journey towards democracy. The celebration of Parliament Day not only marks the historical significance of this institution but also serves to engage citizens in the democratic process, fostering a sense of national pride and responsibility among lawmakers and the public alike.<\/p>\n
