Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong> <\/span>A Mosotho artisan has turned the traditional Mokorotlo hat into a source of livelihood, using her craft to support her family and preserve Basotho culture.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Agency, Ms. Maleshoane Litabe said making and selling Mokorotlo hats has helped her raise her children and sustain her household over the years.<\/p>\n

She explained that she began the business many years ago when her eldest son, who is now 29 years old, was just two years old.<\/p>\n

Ms. Litabe said the business performs best when there are tourists visiting the country, as many of them show interest in buying traditional Basotho products as souvenirs.<\/p>\n

She added that through selling the hats she has been able to provide for her children and meet some of the family\u2019s daily needs.<\/p>\n

However, Ms. Litabe noted that the business also faces several challenges. One of the major difficulties, she said, is the lack of a consistent market for traditional products.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge is that sometimes there is no market for our products, especially when there are fewer visitors,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

She further indicated that bad weather conditions also affect their work, as artisans often rely on suitable weather to produce and sell their crafts.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges, Ms. Litabe continues to make Mokorotlo hats, saying the craft is not only a means of survival but also an important way of preserving Basotho heritage.<\/p>\n

The Mokorotlo hat is one of the most recognised cultural symbols of Lesotho and represents the country\u2019s identity and traditions.<\/p>\n
