The National University of Lesotho’s Confucius Institute celebrated UN Chinese Language Day, emphasizing the importance of multilingualism and cultural exchange. Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong> <\/span>As language is essential for connecting, conveying deep emotions and preserving cultural , the National University of Lesotho Confucius Institute of Agriculture on Friday celebrated the United Nations (UN) Chinese Language Day with different schools and sectors as well as community.<\/p>\n

The event held at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) on Friday under the theme: \u201cChinese Sparkling Beautiful Dreams\u201d was graced by the presence of Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition Mr. Thabo Mofosi, Chinese Embassy Counselor Mr. Lu Hui, Vice-Chancellor Professor Isaac Fajana and Permanent Secretary Dr. Khothatso Ts\u2019ooana to mention a few.<\/p>\n

Language transforms simple interactions into meaningful bonds, acting as the key to understanding, unity and shared human experience.In his remarks, Minister Mofosi said the event promotes use of multi languages.<\/p>\n

He said China and Lesotho maintain strong and cooperative relationship in different sectors including infrastructure, health, education, agriculture and economic development.<\/p>\n

He said Chinese Language is regarded an official languages and many countries are incorporating Lesotho is no exception as it already has different schools teaching the language.<\/p>\n

He said the Confucius Institute is sharing the Chinese language and culture while at the same time improving agricultural sustainability of Lesotho.<\/p>\n

He therefore invited NUL to work with the ministry in improving agriculture and food security in this country.At the same event, Professor Fajana said this spectacular celebration showcases the Chinese culture.<\/p>\n

He said learning multiple languages unlocks opportunities in trade, agriculture and economy for Basotho youth.<\/p>\n

He said Chinese language is recognised worldwide for opportunities that comes with it including scholarships and people to people exchanges.<\/p>\n

He expressed gratitude to the Embassy for unwavering support to Confucius Institute and the university saying the institute does not only organize cultural shows but also advances innovation in agriculture and food technology.<\/p>\n

He called on students and professionals to take part in supporting the new short term programs to be launched by the Conficius Institute.<\/p>\n

He added that Chinese proficiency empowers youth as agri-extension experts, researchers and diplomats, turning multilingualism into a competitive edge for personal and national success.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Consular Lu said the Chinese language is a bridge for connectivity and mutual understanding saying language is the carrier of culture and the bond between peoples.<\/p>\n

He said the steady development of Chinese language education in Lesotho has created an increasingly strong platform for communication between the two countries.<\/p>\n

He said the Chinese language is an opportunity for youth development and practical cooperation saying mastering Chinese opens up broad prospects for personal growth and national development.<\/p>\n

He said it connects Lesotho to China\u2019s vast market, advanced science and technology and mature development experience as well as the fast-growing China-African cooperation.<\/p>\n

He added that the Chinese language is a key to inheriting civilizational wisdom, addressing global challenges and building a fairer international order.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, our world is facing rising instability and uncertainty.The deficit in peace, development and governance is widening and the international community is eagerly calling for solidarity and cooperation. Against this backdrop, China has put forward four major global initiatives: the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Consular Lu assured that China will continue to work with Lesotho to launch more colourful people-to-people exchange programs throughout the year, further expand educational cooperation, deepen youth interactions and make people-to-people bonds a powerful engine for the long-term development of China-Lesotho relations.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Professor Ts\u2019episo Rants\u2019o, Acting Pro-Vice Chancellor said this opens doors to opportunities beyond especially in China.<\/p>\n

He however urged that Chinese nationals should also learn Sesotho so that can communicate with locals in their language.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must take Sesotho to the Chinese national so that they are able to communicate with the locals in their own language\u201d.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Mrs. \u2018Malisema Ramaili, Principal at Grant Start Junior School said this is a great opportunity for her learners especially as there are more Chinese nationals in different sectors in the country saying it is going to allow easy communication.<\/p>\n

Different students said though it is a difficult language to learn, it is however enjoyable once one is familiar with it.Meanwhile in this semester alone, the Confucius Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology at NUL has provided Chinese language training to 1,530 learners.<\/p>\n

Chinese language has now been introduced as an elective course at the NUL and there are plans to establish a Bachelor program in Chinese Language in the coming<\/p>\n

semester.<\/p>\n

UN Chinese Language Day is observed annually on April 20 to celebrate the language\u2019s cultural, historical and global significance, marking its 17th occurrence.<\/p>\n

The 2026 celebrations emphasized multilingualism,innovation in language and the role of Chinese in internation exchange.This is the second year that UN Chinese Language Day is celebrated in Lesotho.<\/p>\n

The UN Chinese Language Day, observed annually on April 20, aims to promote the cultural and historical significance of the Chinese language globally. This event has been celebrated for 17 years, with a focus on multilingualism and innovation in language education. In Lesotho, the Confucius Institute plays a crucial role in fostering Chinese language learning and cultural exchange, enhancing cooperation between Lesotho and China across various sectors, including education and agriculture.
