Melele recently celebrated Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Day at Patlong Primary School, emphasizing the importance of children’s rights and access to preschool education. The event featured performances and discussions led by various stakeholders, highlighting the need for inclusive education and better nutrition for children, particularly in Qacha\u2019s Nek.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong> <\/span>Defying cold and rainy weather, Melele on Friday gathered at Patlong Primary School to commemorate Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Child Day, with stakeholders and children calling for stronger protection of children\u2019s rights and improved access to preschool education.<\/p>\n

The colourful event began with a march from Patlong High School, followed by lively entertainment that included dances and lithothokiso.<\/p>\n

Children, some dressed in outfits representing their dream careers such as soldiers, police officers and nurses, captivated the audience, while birth certificates were also distributed.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s commemoration was held under the theme focusing on strengthening children\u2019s rights, inclusivity and amplifying their voices for a better future.<\/p>\n

The event was hosted by the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) through the ECCD Unit in Qacha\u2019s Nek to raise awareness on the role of early learning in preparing children for primary education.<\/p>\n

According to Acting District Education Manager, Mr. Mapepe Rakotje, the celebration was intended to showcase the importance of ECCD and to encourage communities to prioritise early childhood education.<\/p>\n

National ECCD Teacher Trainer for Qacha\u2019s Nek, Ms. Nteboheleng Jim, said children who attend preschool develop resilience that helps them cope with future challenges.<\/p>\n

She noted that \u201csuch resilience is critical because parents or guardians will not always be present to guide them.\u201d She appealed to caregivers to enrol children in preschool, adding that chiefs had been capacitated to assist in establishing centres where they are not available.<\/p>\n

National Early Childhood Development of Lesotho (NECDoL) Teacher Coach for Qacha\u2019s Nek, Ms. Kolisang Malau, said they work closely with the Ministry to ensure preschool attendance. She said early childhood education plays a critical role in developing children\u2019s cognitive, social and emotional skills, while also improving school readiness and laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Lebohang Monyamane-Nthake, District Nutrition Officer from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, said children have a right to nutritious food and urged parents, caregivers and teachers to uphold that right.<\/p>\n

She said while children receive proper nutrition during breastfeeding, many parents fail to provide appropriate supplements thereafter, contributing to malnutrition, a challenge she said is affecting Qacha\u2019s Nek at 48 percent, the highest in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese children are at a critical stage where they need a healthy balanced diet, including all the three food groups,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She further appealed to teachers to establish school gardens with the support of parents and encouraged parents to also support household food production.<\/p>\n

During a children\u2019s lithothokiso performance, learners called for stronger parental care and responsibility at home, saying alcohol abuse was affecting families. They said some parents spend most of their time in bars, leaving children unattended, and called for alcohol to be banned.<\/p>\n

Patlong Area Chief Representative Mr. Ts\u2019ita Maputsoe said \u201cToday is a very big and important day. ECCD is a source for Grade 1 enrolment and if such a vital area is not nurtured, it would be a very serious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

Qacha\u2019s Nek MP Mohlahlobi Busa raised concern over children with disabilities who are hidden in homes, saying they are being deprived of their right to preschool education.<\/p>\n

He urged the Ministry to ensure that such children are identified and included in ECCD programmes.<\/p>\n

He further said some parents do not enrol children due to fees, while others are affected by poverty. \u201cThe ministry should improve primary schools to ensure no child is left behind in accessing preschool education in all primary schools,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also raised concern that during performances, children dressed in career outfits did not include agriculture or teaching, urging early exposure to diverse career paths.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should catch them young. There is life and a career in agriculture. Entrepreneurship is already part of the curriculum and should be introduced early so that children grow with that foundation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He further called for mother tongue inclusion in education, noting that Lesotho officially recognises languages such as Xhosa, isiNdebele and isiPhuthi alongside Sesotho and English.\u201cThe ministry should identify and train teachers for these languages,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The ministry\u2019s achievements include ECCD include the introduction of ECCD around 1985, the launch of an ECCD curriculum by the Lesotho College of Education in 2007 for certificate and diploma training, the absorption of ECCD teachers into the Teaching Service Department in 2010, and the ECCD curriculum review in 2023.<\/p>\n

The commemoration highlighted both progress and ongoing challenges in early childhood development, particularly around access, inclusion and community responsibility, with stakeholders calling for sustained efforts to ensure that every child benefits from early learning opportunities.<\/p>\n

Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) in Lesotho has evolved since its introduction around 1985, with significant milestones including the launch of a dedicated ECCD curriculum in 2007. This curriculum aimed to enhance the training of ECCD teachers, leading to their integration into the Teaching Service Department in 2010. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in ensuring equitable access to preschool education for all children, including those with disabilities and from impoverished backgrounds.<\/p>\n
