Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>Mokhotlong District Governor Serame Linake said his people were left in the lurch after heavy rains flooded the country. Linake said heavy rains had left the community in need of car bridges, footpaths and roads as water carried animals and herdsmen, dilapidated houses and equipment used at the polihali dam gone and the Mokhotlong area appeared to be severely affected.<\/p>\n

it is these rains that have flooded. Mr Linake explains that the reports he has obtained indicate that four (4) rivers have washed away the rugged fields with such rivers and two local bridges. He said seven (7) bridges had been washed away by the senqu river and this made it difficult for the community to access basic services.<\/p>\n

“These incidents are very depressing because it is difficult for the community to carry out their reasons due to the need for bridges and roads but the saddest thing is the people who died as a result of these rains,” he said.<\/p>\n

Continuing, Mr. Linake explained that the Red River was six (6) foot bridges badly damaged by rain and that two bridges were cut due to high water levels.<\/p>\n

There were also affected water animals (29) sheep and (3) goats taken from the Tlhanyaku River where there was also a shepherd who survived although 40 other sheep they were drowned.<\/p>\n

The district commissioner in Mokhotlong said it was discovered that one of the herdsmen had drowned, and he was found dead on the other side of the river.<\/p>\n

He also pointed out that where the Senqu River flows near the Polihali dam site, water has washed away the machinery that is still working on the dam.<\/p>\n

He said there were no vehicles in the area and tunnels were flooded and he could not give exact figures on how much goods were involved. \u201cBesides, reports indicate that at least 11 homes were infested during the monsoon season.<\/p>\n

I have not yet received full details of whether the houses were actually damaged as a result of the rains, so I continue to find out the cause of the collapse, \u201dhe said.<\/p>\n
