Africa-Press – Lesotho. <\/strong><\/span>As South Africa battles a highly infectious new mutation of Covid-19, the country\u2019s leading expert on the pandemic has urged wealthier nations not to hoard vaccine supplies, describing the behaviour as<\/p>\n

\u201cunconscionable\u201d and warning that \u201cno-one is safe until everyone is safe\u201d. \u201cFundamentally, there\u2019s a mistaken belief by some<\/p>\n

countries that they can vaccinate their populations and they\u2019ll be safe. \u201cIt simply is not true. In this world that we live in, with this coronavirus, no-one is safe until everyone is safe,\u201d said Prof<\/p>\n

Salim Abdool Karim, chair of the government\u2019s coronavirus advisory panel. He warned of the risk of a long, international \u201ccat and mouse\u201d chase to defeat Covid-19 with constantly updated vaccines if the<\/p>\n

pandemic was allowed to keep spreading in countries which were unable to vaccinate their populations in good time. \u201cThere\u2019s no endgame that sees one country succeeding in<\/p>\n

controlling the virus while the rest of the world is dealing with rampant spread. For me, we all need to stand together. It\u2019s in everyone\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me it would be unconscionable that a country like the US or UK to start vaccinating low risk young people, when we here in Africa<\/p>\n

haven\u2019t even started vaccinating healthcare workers and the elderly. \u201cAt the rate at which things are going, that is what\u2019s going to happen,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

Africa\u2019s Covid crisis: South African hospitals have been grappling with a huge second wave of infections caused by a variant of the virus, with 23 different<\/p>\n
