Africa-Press – Liberia. President George M. Weah has named the Ministerial Complex after former Liberia leader, Madame Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, calling it the “Ellen Johnson Ministerial Complex.”

According to him, the naming of the Chinese-built ministerial complex is in accordance with the recognition of Liberians female collective development in ensuring women participation across the country.

The Liberia leader spoke Tuesday at the Ministerial Complex during the celebration of the International Women’s Day (IWD) which was commemorated under the global theme “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow” with a national theme “Liberia Women in History: Breaking Barriers and Setting the Stage for Gender Equality.”

This year’s celebration is also tied to the Bicentennial Celebration-Liberia: The Land of Return, Commemorating 200 years of Freedom and Pan-African Leadership.

Moreover, President Weah noted that the government and citizens should work harder to ensure that women are truly free and inspired; adding that, the Liberian women and girls voices will continuously be heard.

“It is a collective shame on our conscience for the numerous rape cases across the country which stronger measures need to be taken to bring these issues under control,” he emphasized.

The Liberia Feminist in Chief announced his commitment to ensure that women and girls are empowered and saved from all form of violence, stating that he is fully convinced that they can contribute immensely to the growth and development of the country.

“The issue of Gender Based Violence is alarming, that’s why I have committed myself to work with the judiciary system to make sure that those perpetrators are brought to justice and prosecuted,” the Liberian Chief Executive pointed out.

However, President Weah urged Liberians to expose perpetrators to ensure they face justice, thus encouraging men to be proactive and join the fight as HeForShe to ensure that SGBV is minimized.

He further encouraged women to think positively in pursuing their dreams, citing “You can only be marginalized if you think you are. So you should remain resilient believing that you can achieve your dreams no matter the obstacles.”

The Liberian Leader applauded the international partners of Liberia and encouraged them to continue their support towards the development of the country, adding that “Together we can achieve gender equality.

The International Women’s Day is annually held on March 8, as a means of celebrating women throughout history and across the globe. The day seeks to honor the voices that go unheard, tears that go unnoticed and their rights that are dominated by society.

It is also marked as a day for women around the globe to come out and compel the world to recognize the gender inequalities that plague women who have overcome these barriers.
