Africa-Press – Liberia. The president of Prison fellowship Liberia Rev. Francis Kollie has disclosed to journalists that his institution will shortly embark on major renovation work at the famous Monrovia Central Prison (South Beach).

Speaking to a team of newsmen Monday at the Prison Fellowship Liberia office in Congo town, Rev. Kollie revealed that the women section of the prison, record room, and the storage facility of the kitchen will be fully renovated during the process.

According to him, the initiative is a partnership between Prison Fellowship Liberia and an international humanitarian organization Logo Hope International. Speaking further, Rev. Kollie indicated that when completed, the renovation will greatly help in the running of the Monrovia Central Prison.

“We are going to be rebuilding the record system completely, we are going to do a lot. At the movement, the kitchen does not have a storage facility. So, we will build a storage room for the kitchen and renovate the women’s section of the prison.” Rev. Kollie noted

In addition to the renovation, Rev. Kollie asserted that inmates will also benefit from free medical supplies from Logo Hope International. Under the partnership, Logo Hope International will also carry out eye tests, provide hygiene materials for female inmates as well as provide capacity building for them in tailoring.

“We are going to be providing free eye service for all the inmates at the prison. We will also be giving out hygienic protection for the women and going to conduct training in the field of tailoring so at the end of the day they will be sewing their own uniform.” He averred

Rev. Kollie is however calling on the government of Liberia to take a cue from reports by international organizations on the bad state of prison in the country.

According to him, it’s against international practice to imprison people without providing the services they need as prisoners. “We think it is a disservice to Liberians when you just incarcerate people without providing the needed services require of a prison.”

The prison Fellowship Liberia president noted that the well-being of prisoners is very cardinal to any country in the improvement of human rights records at the international level.

“One of the areas that your human rights record is graded is on how you treat your prisoners. We really hope that record will improve,” he stated.
