Cummings Accused of ‘Instigating Chaos in Liberty Party’

Africa-Press – Liberia. Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence has warned Alexander Cummings, the political leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) to desist from “infusing confusion in the Liberty Party under the direction and supervision of Musa Bility.”

The Grand Bassa County Senator’s reaction comes as the party chairman, Bility, is working on modalities to recommit the party to the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP). Bility and that of Cummings’ party are poised to reveal a “new revised framework document as it regards the CPP.

“Regrettably, my office has been informed of a planned program by the ANC and Bility to recommit the party to the CPP, a political collaboration. By this action, we recognize that conflicts are still being infused in our party by Cummings through Bility,” the Liberty Party political leader said. Accordingly, Cummings and his ANC are herewith advised to desist from the illegal and indecent act of intruding and fueling conflict in the Liberty Party.”

“This action by Cummings and his ANC, along with previously proven acts of fueling conflict in the Liberty Party, does not speak well of a group of people wanting to provide leadership for a country already crying aloud for reconciliation.”

Yet, amid her terse remarks concerning Cummings, the ANC has declined to respond. And with Bility firmly recognized by the ANC as the LP’s chairman, it remains to be seen what will be Lawrence’s next move, should the ANC and Bility’s faction of LP officiate the “revised CPP framework”.

Bility insists that the Liberty Party is not divided or split, there are only differences. But Lawrence is “calling on the public not to lend any credence to the planned illegal collaboration.”

The Grand Bassa Senator added that the Liberty Party is no longer a part of the CPP and the decision about the next course of action will be determined through her office with a committee in place, headed by Hans Barchue, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives as chair.

Relying on the party conflict clause, the Senator noted, “I do hereby form a committee that will take charge of all collaboration engagements ahead of the 2023 general and presidential elections and that committee will be headed by Barchue and Executive Committee Member of the Liberty Party and Co-chaired by Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, Vice Chair for Political Affairs.”

The clause in question states that “The Standard Bearer/Political Leader, in consultation and collaboration with the NEC, shall formulate policy and procedures to implement the decisions of the National Convention, call Special Conventions as provided for in Article VIII, and take such other actions and proper measures that he/she may deem as necessary to advance the best interest of the Party.”

In a related development, Senator Lawrence disclosed that on September 3, the Liberty Party will launch a fund drive targeting US$23 million as the party prepares for the 2023 elections.

She named the Port City of Buchanan, the birthplace of LP as the venue for the fundraiser campaign. Lawerence and Dillon, among others within the Liberty Party, support the Presidential bid of former Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai and there are speculations that she might be the vice standard bearer to Boakai in 2023.
