Africa-Press – Liberia. Build Health International (BHI), a global health organization dedicated to improving health infrastructure in low-resource countries, has recently conducted a two-day training program for senior management of Liberia’s Ministry of Health (MOH) in PSA plant management and medical oxygen delivery. The training, held at the Star-Based Oxygen Plant, aimed to equip MOH officials with practical knowledge and skills necessary for successful integration of PSA plants into the country’s public health systems.
BHI, a non-profit organization headquartered in the United States, focuses on constructing health infrastructure in low-income nations worldwide. Their presence in Liberia was initiated through an invitation from the Ministry of Health to support the training of senior MOH staff. The goal is to ensure that medical managers in Liberia possess comprehensive information on the requirements for effectively operating PSA plants within the public health system. Key topics covered during the training included site preparation, operational requirements, human resources, and budgeting.
Mr. Andrew L. Johnston, the Director of Medical Oxygen Education and Training at Build Health International, explained that the training, which commenced on Monday and concluded on Tuesday, aimed to assist senior MOH staff in managing and supporting the upcoming PSA oxygen plant in Liberia. Johnston expressed his admiration for Liberia’s efforts in increasing the number of medical oxygen plants throughout the country to enhance accessibility.
“Liberia is actively working to increase the number of medical oxygen plants in order to make medical oxygen more accessible,” said Johnston.
In his role as a technical advisor, Johnston emphasized that BHI is committed to providing guidance and support to Liberia’s health sector. The organization aims to equip senior managers with practical knowledge in areas such as human resources planning, management, and capacity building for engineers, biomedical technicians, and facilities management personnel. Additionally, BHI will assist in daily maintenance, routine repairs, and utilize maintenance and repair data for management purposes.
Johnston revealed that the training program, which began with senior MOH staff on Monday and Tuesday, will continue from Wednesday to Friday. During the next phase, BHI will collaborate with technicians to focus on the management of the PSA plant and oxygen delivery management. This phase aims to establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Medical Oxygen PSA Plants.
Mr. George S. Dokie Jr., a pharmacist from Bong County and participant in the training, expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts of BHI and the MOH. He commended them for providing an opportunity to enhance knowledge in managing Liberia’s PSA oxygen plants and ensuring the availability of life-saving oxygen for patients in need.
