Africa-Press – Liberia. The Director General of the National Bureau of Concession (NBC), Atty. Edwin Dennis, as part of an effort to find an alternative livelihood system for concession-affected communities in Liberia, the Partnerships For Forests (P4F), NBC, and others, over the weekend, held a lesson-sharing event on smallholder oil palm grower arrangements in Liberia.

The NBC Boss speaking at the training in Monrovia on Friday, August 4, 2023, acknowledged participants for accepting the invite and said the initiative was made possible following a tour to Ghana to sort out a way to improve the livelihood of Liberians who are affected by concession activities by companies being operated in Liberia.According to him, as part of ways to improve the lives of people who are affected by concessions companies in Liberia, the Government of Liberia through NBC chose to invite a Ghanaian Firm (Three Crops Development Authority), through Partnerships For Forests’ (P4F) to come over and share their experiences, techniques, and knowledge with us using the Ghanaian model in sorting alternative livelihood schemes for concession affected communities in Liberia.

He said: “Alternative livelihood requires a lot of investment, and for there to be investment, then there should be a peaceful coexistent in our community so therefore, we’re using this medium to encourage our community residents who are in concession affected area to exercise peace and patience as things have been done to ensure that they have alternative livelihood as their communities have been affected by concession companies in Liberia. “

Kwasi Baah Oforie, Estate Manager, Benso Oil palm Plantation Ghana, in remarks, said upon the invitation of P4F, their presence in Liberia is to facilitate knowledge exchange among key stakeholders representing the private public, and civil society sectors in Liberia, delving into the opportunities to replicate smallholder schemes in Liberia.

For his part, Mr. Foster Kwame Boateng, Deputy CEO of Three Crop Development Authority, Ghana, said the government and private sector needs to work together to transform the economy through an enabling environment. And their aim in Liberia is to ensure the government of Liberia and the private sectors are working together making sure a sustained mechanism is put in place for residents of affected concession areas.
