Africa-Press – Liberia. After finishing as runners-up in the 2021 African Cup of Nations for Amputee Football in Tanzania, Liberia Amputees Monday returned home with the 2nd place trophy and the golden boot.

The Amputee Lone Star lost 3-2 to Ghana in the final on Saturday. Not only did they finish as runners-up, they also booked their ticket to the 2022 Amputee World Cup slated for October 2022.

At the Roberts International Airport, the team was proudly received by Deputy Youth and Sports Min. G. Andy Quamie alongside officials of the Liberia Amputee Federation, teammates, loved ones, and onlookers who were awaiting other passengers.

As was expected, Matthew Joe, who ended the campaign with nine goals in five games as golden boot winner, was the most celebrated player for his outstanding performance. The Amputee Lone Star had a fantastic journey in the tournament after finishing as Group C winners with six points from two games ahead of Cameroon and The Gambia.

Later in the quarterfinals, Liberia edged past Morocco 2-1 to progress to the semifinals, a win that automatically qualified them for the world cup. In the semifinals, it took the Amputee Lone Star just a single late goal through Matthew Joe to reach their record fifth final.

A total of 13 teams participated in this year’s edition of the tournament. Angola finished as 3rd place winner. Liberia, Angola, Tanzania, and Morocco will represent Africa at the 2022 Amputee World Cup.
