Supreme Court Halts Acting EPA Director from Carrying out Functions Following a Complaint Filed by His Predecessor Wilson Tarpeh

Africa-Press – Liberia. FrontPageAfrica has gathered that the Supreme Court Friday issued a Writ of Prohibition on the acting executive director of the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia, Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo from carrying out functions of the EPA pending a conference with the Associate Justice Yussif Kaba.

The court order comes in the wake of a complaint filed by former Acting Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia, Prof. Wilson Tarpeh.

“Meanwhile, you are ordered to stay all further proceedings and/or actions pending the outcome of the conference”.

Sources have also hinted FPA that Mr. Tarpeh is requesting to be reinstated as EPA executive director or be paid by the government of Liberia his “benefits” for the remaining years of his tenure as executive director.

Meanwhile, part III, Section 16, count 1 and 2 of the Act that created the EPA which leads to the appointment of an executive director states that “There shall be an Executive Director who is a person with wide environmental knowledge and recognized comment to sustainable management of the environment, appointed by the President from a list of three names recommended by the Council, except that the President may appoint an interim Executive Director pending the formation of the Council.”

“The Executive Director shall serve for a period of 7 years and shall be eligible for re-appointment, except that there shall be appointed an interim Executive Director.

Prof. Tarpeh was appointed by former Pres. George Weah on October 1, 2020, without the formation of the Policy Council, which has the power to recommend the name of three persons to the President, one of whom shall be appointed by the President.
