Education Stakeholders Celebrate Inauguration of TVET Center in Harper

Africa-Press – Liberia. Education stakeholders in Harper City, Maryland County last week assembled in their numbers to celebrate the inauguration of a new Technical and Vocational Training Center. This center aims to provide skills training for young people in the county and surrounding areas.

The dedication ceremony, held on Friday, March 15, was attended by representatives from various schools in the region, who paraded the streets to mark the occasion.

The vocational school is an initiative of the Youth Rising project, funded by the European Union and the Government of Sweden in partnership with Liberia’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Youth and Sports, which supports technical and vocational education and training in Liberia.

Addressing the attendees at the TVET Center in Lake Shepherd Community, Madam Annie Sleweon, Principal of Cape Palmas High School, announced that the vocational school is an extension of their institution, offering courses in disciplines such as Agriculture, Auto Mechanic, Computer Science, Electricity, Carpentry, Plumbing, and Masonry.

“Our doors are open to all the schools across Maryland, including people who are not in school but have the desire to learn a trade,” Sleweon noted.

She emphasized that while the vocational training services are not free, the registration process will begin on March 18, with exemptions granted to Cape Palmas High School students.

“This TVET is not a come-let-go graduate institution. If you have that in your mind, please change your plans,” Annie Sleweon cautioned. The CPHS principal lauded the school faculties and the general public, who allowed their kids and students to be part of the dedication ceremony.

The dedication ceremony, which took place on Friday, March 15, brought together, Sarah Elizabeth Gibson Elementary, Harper Demonstration Elementary, Junior and Senior High, Yoàkpê Foundation High School, John Hillary High School, E. Othello Gongar Cape Palmas High School man schools among others.

Implemented by the United Nations Industrial Organization (UNIDO), the Youth Rising project aims to enhance youth employment opportunities by providing quality skills training, promoting entrepreneurship, and aligning education with industry needs.

The Government of Liberia has expressed its commitment to improving human capabilities and enhancing the quality of education to meet the demands of the labor market. This project is part of the country’s broader efforts to prioritize youth employment and strengthen skills development.

The European Union invested 25,250.00 EUR, and the Swedish Government contributed 55,000,000 SEK towards the project, which has brought excitement and opportunities to residents of Maryland County, including those who have discontinued high school education and those seeking vocational training options.
