Africa-Press – Liberia. A group of Grand Gedians, both in Liberia and the Diaspora, have appealed to several international partners, including the United States Embassy, European Union, and Mano River Union, to urge President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to reconsider the appointment of Alex Chersia Grant as Superintendent of Grand Gedeh County.
The group highlighted the potential risks of appointing Grant, pointing to his controversial background and lack of public support, which could lead to instability in the region.
They emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in Grand Gedeh and called for foreign missions in Liberia to be aware of the potentially explosive situation that could arise from Grant’s appointment.
Grant, who previously served as the Representative of Grand Gedeh County District #1, was appointed by President Boakai on April 24, 2024, following his confirmation by the Liberian Senate. The confirmation process saw over 20 senators vote in favor of Grant.
The National Chairman of the Concerned Grand Gedeh Citizens in Liberia, Weafus Kamawon Quitoe, expressed his concern over Grant’s appointment, noting his recent loss in the 2023 senatorial election, which he said indicated a lack of support for Grant’s leadership within the county.
Quitoe also pointed to allegations against Grant, including forging academic credentials and accusations of attempted murder by his Chief of Office Staff, Aaron Togba, which he described as evidence of Grant’s problematic past. Additionally, Grant was linked to the disappearance of Grand Gedeh County’s Election Magistrate, Alfred Dunner, in 2022, a case that remains unsolved.
Critics of Grant argue that his appointment could lead to unrest and hinder development efforts in Grand Gedeh. Several local groups, including the Grand Gedeh County Elders Council and Traditional Elders Council, have called on President Boakai to withdraw Grant’s nomination.
Despite these concerns, the Liberian Senate unanimously voted to confirm Grant’s appointment, which has sparked debate and further opposition from citizens. Quitoe urged international missions in Liberia to intervene and persuade President Boakai to revoke Grant’s appointment in the interest of maintaining stability in Grand Gedeh.
