Africa-Press – Liberia. Critics banging and blaming the Boakai Administration for a speech delivered by the Orator of Liberia’s 177th Independence on Friday, July 26, 2024, seem to be crying more than the bereaved. To insinuate that the mind of Orator Robtel Neajai Pailey represents the views of the Government of Liberia is highly unfortunate and laughable.
The doomsayers seek to use a small portion of a speech that comprehensively catalogs Liberia’s existence, governing structure, and public service deficits spanning over two centuries to politically drive a wedge between the current administration and the United States.
Those championing such an impression want the Liberian people to wrongly think and believe the Boakai administration is anti-America, which is nothing else but a pure fallacy. In fact, there is an improved relationship between the Government of Liberia and the United States Government, evidenced by meetings held between President Boakai and U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield immediately after the President took office.
However, contrary to wishful thinkers and those wanting to exploit the situation to their selfish advantage, the U.S. Embassy near Monrovia issued a statement immediately on Friday, July 26, 2024, reconfirming that the United States and Liberia share a unique history and democratic values. Unfortunately, the national orator, not the Government of Liberia, introduced divisive rhetoric and unfounded accusations in her oration.
The statement continues that the United States has a long history of providing foreign assistance, amounting to at least $163 million annually, which is separate from the U.S. government’s contributions to several international organizations that also provide aid to the Liberian people, debunking the orator.
It continues that while the orator is entitled to freedom of speech, Chargé d’Affaires Catherine Rodriguez chose to exercise her right not to listen to such remarks. Pure and simple.
It is CDA Rodriguez’s right to disagree with Orator Pailey as a representative of her country and government, which she demonstrated by walking out of the Pavilion during the speech. This does not in any way suggest that the Government of Liberia sanctioned the speech in its entirety.
Orchestrators of misinformation and disinformation should understand that wishing a downfall of one administration does not help the country and its people in any way. This crab mentality has ruined Liberia for a long, and those involved should desist for a better Liberia.
We Liberians are noted for crucifying our own rather than celebrating them. Madam Robtel Neajai Pailey’s beautiful and inclusive ration is being thrown in the dustbin just because we differ with her opinion on America.
This proud daughter of ours should be celebrated for a brilliant speech on our 177th Independence that should be greeted with divergent views, rightfully so, rather than sending her to the toilet, as some are bent on doing, unfortunately.
