With Liberia facing mounting development challenges following a sharp cut in U.S. aid, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti has turned to new allies in the Gulf to help keep critical services afloat, particularly in healthcare.
On Thursday, Minister Nyanti met with Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSRelief), during a high-level visit to Riyadh aimed at strengthening Liberia’s humanitarian ties with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
In a dispatch from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Nyanti described the visit as “a necessary step to bridge the critical gaps created by the USAID aid cut.”
“We are here today to build on the strong foundation of partnership we’ve shared with KSRelief,” she said.
“Liberia is committed to transparency, accountability, and effective implementation as we seek partners to support our development goals, especially in the health sector.”
Nyanti did not mince words about the crisis unfolding at home, where healthcare systems, already stretched, are struggling to meet the needs of ordinary Liberians.
The appeal to Saudi Arabia comes as the West African country seeks to diversify its donor partnerships amid growing uncertainty in traditional aid flows.
Dr. Al Rabeeah responded with strong words of support, praising the Minister’s leadership and reaffirming KSRelief’s commitment to Liberia.
“We value our friendship with Liberia,” he said. “Our center stands ready to help revive and strengthen Liberia’s health sector. We are optimistic about the future of this collaboration.”
He also pledged to explore broader areas of cooperation, including education and other critical sectors, signaling Saudi Arabia’s growing role as a humanitarian partner on the African continent.
The meeting ended with mutual pledges to deepen strategic coordination and expand humanitarian support to Liberians, offering a ray of hope amid tightening global aid budgets.
