Africa-Press – Liberia. In an effort to improve its eye healthcare services to the population of Liberia and in the sub-region, the New Eyesight Center has begun to pilot a new software to detect glaucoma at the early stage in patients.
For the past three months, according to the Center’s Executive Director, Robert F. Dolo, the software has been used to provide the much-needed eye services to patients, especially glaucoma patients trooping at the institution daily.
Mr. Dolo disclosed that the software which can speed-up the process of glaucoma patients in less than five minutes and keeps patients’ accurate records for a long period is being done in partnership with Eyeonic Limited based in Australia.
Besides, he indicated: “The software can enable eye healthcare providers to access glaucoma patients’ records from anywhere around the world and keep constant track of all the patients”.
Mr. Dolo narrated that the usage of the new software at the New Eyesight Center is to do away with the machine-based system to the use of smartphones, laptops and computers in carrying out glaucoma test for patients.
The New Eyesight Center Executive Director spoke Wednesday in the Sinkor suburb of Monrovia during a one–day gathering for eye healthcare providers across the country to abreast them with the new software.
Mr. Dolo used the event to call on the health authorities, mainly the Division of Eye Services to support this new software initiative to elevate the services of eye care delivery to avoid many people from getting blind from glaucoma.
He vowed to explore new avenues to ensure, Liberia as a country get the best when it comes to eye healthcare services for the population and thanked Eyeonic Limited for partnering with NESC to have this technology in eye care services to be introduced in the country.
The gathering held at the Carina Hotel and brought together over 30 eye healthcare practitioners from various public and private hospitals and eye clinics.
The participants were from SDA Cooper Hospital, l14 Military Hospital, New Sight Eye and Medical Center Gbarnga Annex, Iris Vision Medical and Eye Clinic, Excellent Medical Clinic, Jackson F. Doe Eye Center and Good Vision Liberia.
Other health facilities were Ganta united Methodist Hospital, ONESIGHT, Liberia Eye Center/JFK Memorial Medical, Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital, Hope for Women Eye Center and Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital.
Also speaking during the ceremony, Eyeonic Limited Commercial Director, David Quartey, termed the software as effective and efficient that needs to be welcomed in Liberia by all professionals in the eye healthcare sector.
Mr. Quartey stated: “This software is patients friendly and is more convince, as well as reliable in the eye health services of countries around the world, which Liberia is no exception”.
He emphasized that the soft is currently being used and rolled up in many countries around the global and was passionate to have Liberia included in the initiative because countries are doing away with machine diagnosis.
Mr. Quartey mentioned that Liberia is amongst several countries that has many people are getting blind from glaucoma because they were not previous detected, which is very bad.
He reiterated that the software can at the very early stage detect glaucoma that can lead to early treat, which can avoid people from going blind because glaucoma is a silence eye complication that before it is noticed the patient is already blind.
Mr. Quartey said he look forward to greater partnership with the New Eyesight Center in Liberia to improve the country’s eye health sector with advance technologies.
For their part, the participants in the day-long hands–on new eye software, thanked the management of New Eyesight Center and its partner, Eyeonic Limited based in Australia for what they termed as a worthwhile venture in the eye care service being introduced to them.
