Africa-Press – Liberia. Rep. Chiewolo Listens quietly as his communication is being deliberated upon.
As the matter involving ‘quack’ Doctor Peter Matthew George still unresolved, Lofa County Electoral District # 5 Representative, Augustine B. Chiewolo, has written the House of Representatives to summon top health officials including Liberia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Jarso Jallah, the Medical Director of ELWA Hospital, and the President of the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) before the full plenary.
The communication, which was read Tuesday, June 17, 2025 during the 10th day sitting of the second session of the second quarters of the 55th Legislature, is triggered by recent troubling reports surrounding the death of a Liberian nurse and allegations of medical impersonation.
Rep. Chiewolo, who is also the Chairperson of the House Committee on Health, alarmed that this matter has sparked public outrage and questions about the integrity of the country’s healthcare system.
The lawmaker cited growing concerns on social media over the death of Madam Jamesetta Kugmeh, a nurse who reportedly died after seeking medical attention at ELWA Hospital.
The incident has since generated public debate, with allegations of foul play by medical staff at the facility, prompting demands for justice from the nursing community and the deceased’s family.
“The information trending has the propensity to create public disorder and put the credibility of our health sector at stake,” Rep. Chiewolo warned.
In addition to the concerns surrounding Madam Kugmeh’s death, Rep. Chiewolo referenced disturbing reports of an individual – a suspended member of the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) and President of the Liberia Medical and Dental Association (LMDA), Mr. George, who reportedly purported as medical doctor.
As per the report and findings from the LMDA and LMDC that led to their suspension decision, Mr. George had long impersonated as a medical doctor – thus going on to steer the affairs of the LMDA as head.
It is reported that this ‘quack’ doctor has been linked to multiple patient deaths due to botched surgeries and poor medical practices, a claim further substantiated by the two medical groups’ action.
Rep. Chiewolo in his communication stressed the appearance of those top health officials as the act of Mr. George has to a larger extent, seriously harmed the reputation of the health sector, leaving many questions unanswered.
Given the seriousness of the allegations and their potential impact on public trust in healthcare institutions, Rep. Chiewolo urged the Legislature to launch a formal inquiry.
He craved plenary’s indulgence to invite the key health officials to provide detailed explanations and clarity on both cases.
“The Legislature must act swiftly to arrest the situation and prevent the reoccurrence of such acts to protect the lives of our people,” the communication emphasized.
The communication, upon its reading, was subsequently deliberated and was sent to leadership to decide.
