Sinoe Lawmaker Reports Cleric Over Alleged Insult

Africa-Press – Liberia. As a means of safeguarding the reputation of the House of Representatives and, by extension, the 55th Legislature, Rep. Quioh called on his colleagues to demand a public apology from Imam Krayee.

Monrovia – Recent remarks by renowned Muslim cleric, Imam Ali Krayee, branding the Liberian Legislature as a “liability to the nation,” have sparked outrage among lawmakers—particularly members of the House of Representatives.

During the 30th Anniversary and General Assembly of the National Imam Council of Liberia, Imam Krayee, in a strongly worded speech, described members of the 55th Legislature as a “national tragedy and liability.”

The cleric accused lawmakers of earning exorbitant salaries while failing to deliver meaningful results, even as ordinary Liberians continue to grapple with poverty.

“They are being paid thousands of dollars for doing nothing, while ordinary Liberians languish in poverty,” Imam Krayee said.

In response, Sinoe County District #1 Representative, Thomas Romeo Quioh, has taken strong exception to the cleric’s comments. In a formal communication to the Plenary—the highest decision-making body of the House—Rep. Quioh brought the matter to the attention of his colleagues.

As a means of safeguarding the reputation of the House of Representatives and, by extension, the 55th Legislature, Rep. Quioh called on his colleagues to demand a public apology from Imam Krayee.

He argued that the statement was not only demeaning, but also “disrespectful and inflammatory,” stating that it undermines the integrity of the Legislature and has the potential to blackmail members and erode public trust.

“The comments made by Imam Krayee are deeply disrespectful and damaging to the reputation of this honorable body. We must not allow such inflammatory rhetoric to go unchallenged or unnoticed,” Rep. Quioh said as he was granted the floor to elaborate on his complaint.

Following the reading of Rep. Quioh’s communication, a motion was passed for the matter to be forwarded to the House’s leadership for further consideration and appropriate action.
