Africa-Press – Liberia. Ex-president Weah lauded Buhari’s contributions to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peace across West Africa.

Former Liberian President George M. Weah on Wednesday paid tribute to the late former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as “a great friend of Liberia and a pillar of stability in the region.”

Weah, currently on a visit to Nigeria, signed the official Book of Condolence in Abuja and briefly addressed journalists, saying he had come to “pay homage” to a leader he credited with supporting Liberia’s peaceful democratic transition and regional security efforts.

“President Buhari was a statesman whose leadership transcended borders,” Weah told reporters. “We are here to honor a man whose legacy will continue to inspire generations.”

Weah’s remarks followed an earlier statement issued from Monrovia on July 13, in which he praised Buhari as a “steadfast partner” and commended his role during Liberia’s 2017 democratic transition. He also lauded Buhari’s contributions to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peace across West Africa.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023 and earlier as military head of state (1983–1985), died on July 13 in London at the age of 82 following a prolonged illness. Widely known for his anti-corruption stance and austere lifestyle, his passing has sparked tributes across the continent and a week of national mourning in Nigeria.

The former president was laid to rest Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu led official commemorations.

Weah’s visit also carried diplomatic undertones. Earlier in the day, he met with Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Abuja, where the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties and expanding areas of cooperation.
