PUP National Youth League Chairman Resigns Over Corruption

Africa-Press – Liberia. The former youth leader criticized the party’s continued association with individuals he claims have been implicated in corrupt practices, including those sanctioned by the U.S. Government.

The National Youth League Chairman of the People’s Unification Party (PUP), Joseph Orlando Beyan, has officially tendered his resignation from the party, citing persistent corruption, a lack of accountability, and internal power struggles that have undermined the party’s founding mission.

In his resignation letter dated August 19, 2025–and addressed to Acting National Chairman Benjamin Massaquoi, the outgoing PUP Youth League Chairman announced his immediate resignation from both his position and the party, expressing deep disappointment over the party’s failure to uphold the principles it was founded upon in 2014.

“I joined the PUP with great hope for our collective effort to empower citizens of Liberia and uplift the young people of the party,” he wrote. “But over the years, it has become increasingly clear that some members of the party are contributing to the persistent corruption that hampers our country’s progress and undermines the growth of the ‘future leaders.’”

The former youth leader criticized the party’s continued association with individuals he claims have been implicated in corrupt practices, including those sanctioned by the U.S. Government.

Mr. Beyan noted the party’s failure to take action against such individuals as a key factor in his decision to resign.

“This speaks volumes about our commitment to accountability and transparency,” the letter stated.

He also referenced internal conflicts within the party that have stifled growth and unity, particularly highlighting an attempted ouster from his position in 2022 by Senator Henry Yallah Nuquay, which he described as unlawful.

Despite his resignation, the former chairman expressed gratitude to members of the Executive Committee who supported him during challenging times, including former PUP Chairman Hon. Samuel G. Kogar.

“Let this stand as a lesson that true leadership cannot be bought, and integrity matters in everything that we do,” he said.

As he steps away from the political party, he extended best wishes for its future, urging party leaders to return to its foundational mission and advocate genuinely for the people of Liberia.

The PUP has not yet issued an official response to the resignation.
