Africa-Press – Liberia. AML’s Head of Sustainability and External Relations, Marcus Wleh, said the sponsorship aligns with one of the company’s core pillars—youth and sports development.
ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Liberia Marathon Trust (LMT), formalizing its continued sponsorship of the annual Liberia Marathon. The agreement solidifies AML’s position as the marathon’s platinum sponsor through 2028.
This year’s marathon is scheduled for October 12 and will be held under the theme “Healthy cities, healthy lives.” The partnership marks a continuation of AML’s support over the past three years and reflects the company’s broader commitment to youth development and community health.
The signing ceremony took place in Monrovia on Tuesday, September 9. Speaking at the event, AML’s Head of Sustainability and External Relations, Marcus Wleh, said the sponsorship aligns with one of the company’s core pillars—youth and sports development.
He emphasized that AML’s involvement goes beyond financial support, extending to logistical assistance and employee participation.
Wleh announced that approximately 100 AML employees are expected to participate in this year’s race across various categories. He also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to support LMT’s outreach and awareness activities in counties outside Montserrado.
“Today, we are committing ourselves to the next three years as the platinum sponsor,” Wleh said. “We are pleased that together we are promoting healthy lifestyles. This MOU reflects our approach of working with partners to advance sustainable development in Liberia.”
Eric Swen, AML’s Community Development Manager, highlighted the long-standing relationship between AML and the Liberia Marathon Trust. He recalled that the partnership dates back to 2011, when AML first sponsored the marathon, and noted that the new MOU aims to strengthen that collaboration.
Speaking on behalf of the Liberia Marathon Trust, Board Chair Charles Dome Cooper expressed appreciation to AML for its continued support. He said the multi-year sponsorship will allow LMT to begin early preparations for future races and expand its organizational capacity.
“ArcelorMittal Liberia has been a reliable partner for over a decade,” Cooper said. “This agreement is a significant commitment that will help us grow and improve the Liberia Marathon experience for all participants.”
The Liberia Marathon consists of three events: a full marathon, a 10K foot race, and a 10K race for individuals using wheelchairs or crutches. The Liberia Marathon Trust, a non-profit organization established in 2011, is responsible for organizing and hosting the annual race.
The renewed partnership is expected to enhance the visibility, reach, and impact of the Liberia Marathon, reinforcing its role as one of the country’s premier sporting events promoting health, inclusion, and community engagement.
