Africa-Press – Liberia. Former Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) chairperson Abdullah Kamara was rearrested early Tuesday morning, September 9, and briefly detained at the Monrovia Central Prison following his reindictment by the Government.
Mr. Kamara, who was later released on an appearance bond valued at US295k, faces reindictment days after his company, Tarmal, was cleared of the initial criminal charges brought against him.
The case led by the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission, which secured the reindictment through the Montserrado Grand Jury, involves nearly US$3.6 million in alleged government fraud.
It is worth recalling that the Supreme Court recently upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss corruption charges against Mr. Kamara, marking a significant development in the high-profile corruption case.
Over the weekend, Associate Justice Jamesetta Howard Wolokollie, acting as the presiding Justice in Chambers, declined to issue a writ of certiorari requested by state prosecutors.
The writ would have allowed the Supreme Court to review and possibly overturn the decision made by Criminal Court ‘C’ Judge Joe Barkon, who dismissed the charges against Kamara on August 1, 2025.
Despite the legal setback, the prosecution re-indicted Kamara. But for now, Justice Wolokollie says she is yet to find the legal grounds to modify or reverse Judge Barkon’s ruling.
The government attempted to challenge Barkon’s ruling at the Supreme Court, arguing that Kamara’s removal from the indictment was premature and that the prosecution should be allowed to proceed.
However, Justice Wolokollie denied the state’s request, effectively affirming the trial court’s decision.
With the charges against Kamara dismissed and the state’s challenge denied at the time, the case was hinging on whether the government would have pursued a new indictment, this time possibly on different legal grounds or charges.
On early Tuesday, morning, September 9, 2025, Mr. Kamara was re-arrested and immediately brought before Criminal Court ‘C’, headed by its presiding Judge Ousman F. Feika to answer to the crimes of theft of Property, misapplication of entrusted Property, criminal facilitation, criminal solicitation, Criminal Conspiracy, economic Sabotage, Internal Revenue misused of Public Money & Records, &Illegal disbursement and Expenditure of Public Money.
Defendant Kamara was apprehended by officers of the Liberia National Police and handed over to the court by sheriffs following a court-issued order.
However, authorities alleged that Kamara violated the terms of his bail and failed to meet legal obligations stemming from his indictment.
The court in an indictment writ of arrest to Major Austine Seinavula, Sheriff, Montserrado County, dated August 8, 2025, ordered the immediate arrest of the living body of Mr. Kamara.
“YOU ARE HEREBY COMMANDED TO ARREST THE LIVING BODY OF ABDULLAH L KAMARA, Co-DEFENDANT, NAMED IN THE ABOVE ENTITLED CAUSE OF ACTION, CHARGED WITH THE Commission OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED CRIMES, BASED UPON THE INDICTMENT PREPARED AGAINST HIM BY THE GRAND JURY DULY SELECTED, EMPANELLED, AND SWORN TO INQUIRE IN AND FOR THE PEOPLE OF MONTSERRADO COUNTY, REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA, AND TO FORTHWITH BRING HIM BEFORE THIS HONORABLE COURT, (FIRST JUDICIAL CIRCUIT, CRIMINAL ASSIZES “C” FOR MONTSERRADO COUNTY), SITTING IN ITS AUGUST TERM, A.D. 2025, ΤΟ ANSWER TO THE SAID CHARGES MENTIONED SUPRA.” the indictment writ of arrest ordered.
The court further instructed its sheriff to have his official returns endorsed on the back of the writ of arrest, indicating the manner and form of its service. -Edited by Othello B. Garblah.
