Africa-Press – Liberia. The Liberia Peacebuilding Office, in partnership with the Ministries of Youth and Sports, Internal Affairs, and Foreign Affairs, has concluded a one-day National Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) Engagement in Gbarnga, aimed at amplifying the voices of young people in shaping Liberia’s global peace and security priorities.
The forum, held on Monday, September 8, 2025, at Passion Hotel 1, brought together youth leaders and representatives from Bong, Nimba, and Lofa Counties to exchange views on Liberia’s role at the United Nations Security Council, where the country is serving a two-year term as a non-permanent member.
Curtis Dabieh, National Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at the Peacebuilding Office, emphasized that Liberia’s influence at the Council depends on inclusive and meaningful participation.
“Our representation at the UN must reflect the aspirations of Liberians, particularly young people. The recommendations from this dialogue will be compiled and shared with national authorities as guiding tools during our tenure,” Dabieh stated.
The dialogue was supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), reinforcing the importance of youth participation in advancing national peacebuilding and security priorities.
In her remarks at the closing ceremony, Madam Janice Smallwood Malekebu, Consultant and Focal Person on Diaspora Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, pledged the Ministry’s full commitment to promoting the National Action Plan on Youth, Peace, and Security (NAP-YPS) and ensuring that young voices remain central in Liberia’s diplomatic and policy engagements.
Also addressing the gathering, Hon. Bryant McGill, Deputy Minister for Youth Development at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, praised participants for their commitment and assured them of his Ministry’s support in advancing youth empowerment and peace initiatives.
“Young people are the backbone of Liberia’s future. Their active involvement will not only strengthen our work at the Security Council but also build a more peaceful and inclusive nation,” McGill said.
The engagement highlighted the pivotal role of youth in consolidating peace, promoting reconciliation, and projecting Liberia’s leadership in international peacebuilding efforts.
