Bassa Sports Leader Resigns for Conflict of Interest

Africa-Press – Liberia. Barely three weeks after citing a “conflict of interest” as the reason for stepping down as Chairman of the Bassa Sports Association (BSA) in Grand Bassa County, Mr. Abraham N. Willie has been appointed Chairman of a similar sports steering committee in neighboring Margibi County, another predominantly Bassa-speaking region.

On August 20, 2025, Willie formally resigned in a letter to Grand Bassa Superintendent Karyou Johnson. In his communication, he explained that his national role as Chairman of the One Bassa Gathering, an umbrella institution created to unify all Bassa people at home and abroad would clash with his responsibilities as head of a county-based sports body.

“Holding both positions simultaneously creates a conflict that may undermine the larger mission of inclusivity and unity,” Willie wrote in his resignation letter.

At the time, his decision was widely seen as a principled move, consistent with his commitment to impartial leadership within the Bassa community.

Many sports enthusiasts interpreted the resignation as a show of respect for the broader interests of Bassa people across Liberia and the diaspora.

However, Willie’s subsequent appointment in Margibi without public explanation has raised questions about his true motivations.

Critics argue that if serving as sports chairman in Grand Bassa conflicted with his national role, then assuming an identical position in Margibi presents the same problem.

Analysts describe the development as a contradiction of his earlier stance. While some Margibians may welcome his presence, others believe the move undermines the very principles he cited when stepping aside in Grand Bassa.

The sports community remains watchful to see whether Willie can reconcile his words with his actions and whether his dual roles will strengthen unity among the Bassa people or deepen divisions between the two counties.
