Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia’s recent election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has triggered a wave of high-level diplomatic engagements, underscoring the country’s growing influence in international affairs.
In recent weeks, Monrovia has hosted delegations from Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Rwanda—each emphasizing Liberia’s role in shaping peace and security during its upcoming Council tenure. The most recent was the visit of Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe, who congratulated Liberia and pledged close cooperation on global and regional challenges.
“The election of Liberia to the Security Council is not only a victory for Liberia but for the African continent,” Minister Nduhungirehe said. “We are confident Liberia will use this platform to advocate for peace, justice, and development across the world.”
His visit culminated in the signing of two landmark agreements between Liberia and Rwanda:
The Establishment of a Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation (JPCC), providing a structured framework for collaboration across multiple sectors.
A Reciprocal Visa Waiver Agreement, allowing citizens of both countries to travel without visa restrictions, aimed at boosting mobility, trade, and people-to-people connections.
Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti hailed the agreements as a defining moment in Liberia–Rwanda relations. “Today, Liberia and Rwanda are writing a new chapter in our history of cooperation. These agreements will strengthen the bonds between our peoples and reflect our shared vision of using economic diplomacy as a tool for progress,” she said.
Nyanti added that the agreements align with Liberia’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID) and highlighted Rwanda’s ongoing support in education, particularly for the 3,000+ Liberian students currently enrolled in Rwandan universities.
Beyond the formal signing, the visit included bilateral talks on peace and security, with Liberia and Rwanda’s security agencies exchanging best practices on peacekeeping, counterterrorism, and regional cooperation.
The Rwandan visit follows earlier missions by Israel’s Ambassador to Liberia, H.E. Roey Gilad, and a Saudi envoy, H.E. Saad Alqathami, both of whom discussed opportunities for collaboration tied to Liberia’s UNSC tenure.
Officials say these diplomatic overtures reflect growing international confidence in Liberia’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the global peace and security agenda while also strengthening bilateral partnerships across Africa and beyond.
