Africa-Press – Liberia. In an article titled “The Untold Truth: How Unity Party Climbed to Power on Falsehoods and Propaganda,” Koijee recounted incidents he claimed were orchestrated to tarnish his image and weaken opposition to now-President Joseph Boakai.
Former Monrovia City Mayor and Secretary General of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson T. Koijee, has launched a scathing attack on the ruling Unity Party (UP), accusing it of ascending to power through “a dangerous pattern of propaganda, falsehoods, and politically motivated attacks.”
In an article titled “The Untold Truth: How Unity Party Climbed to Power on Falsehoods and Propaganda,” Koijee recounted incidents he claimed were orchestrated to tarnish his image and weaken opposition to now-President Joseph Boakai.
He pointed to the January 5, 2025, discovery of a container loaded with firearms at the Freeport of Monrovia as one example. According to him, without any evidence or investigation, UP partisans and surrogates linked him to the scandal in a bid to discredit him.
“It was a clear demonstration of their desperation for power. Fearing my God-given gift and seeing me as a major threat to their ambitions, the Unity Party maliciously painted me as the face behind scandals I knew nothing about,” Koijee stated.
The CDC Secretary General further alleged that key figures within the UP and its alliance pushed the narrative against him without ever producing evidence.
Koijee also cited the November 23, 2023, incident at the UP headquarters on Broad Street, which left several people injured and three dead. He said UP supporters branded him a “domestic terrorist” and blamed him for the violence — an accusation he insists has since unraveled.
“Fast forward to 2025, the truth has surfaced. The actual perpetrator, Lawrence K. Williams, has been arrested and is now under investigation. Where are those who once shouted so loudly that I was guilty?” Koijee questioned.
He lamented what he described as the silence of his accusers following the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, while accusing President Boakai of “sponsoring and tolerating all of the falsehoods” against him.
According to Koijee, such tactics pose a grave threat to Liberia’s democracy, its institutions, and the lives of innocent citizens.
“False accusations are not just aimed at destroying me,” he wrote. “They cast a long shadow over every young Liberian who looks up to me, every family who prays for justice, and every citizen who dares to believe in the promise of truth.”
Calling for impartial justice and a rejection of “trial by propaganda,” Koijee urged Liberians to hold leaders accountable and resist what he described as a growing culture of smear campaigns.
“Our future cannot be built on propaganda,” he said. “We must reject the poisonous culture of smear campaigns and reclaim Liberia’s path of justice, truth, and integrity.”
Koijee’s remarks come at a time of heightened political tension, as the Boakai administration continues to face scrutiny over governance, appointments, and human rights concerns. The Unity Party has yet to officially respond to his allegations.
Meanwhile, the international community — including the European Union, U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, and African Union — continues to monitor Liberia’s political climate, urging adherence to democratic principles and respect for the rule of law.
