CDC’s HQ project faces storm

Africa-Press – Liberia. Former President George Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change party faces storm here, as it endeavors to construct a new headquarters after losing its former headquarters to court eviction in September.

A heated land ownership dispute has cast a shadow over the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony for the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC’s) new national headquarters, set for October 18, 2025, in Congo Town, Monrovia.

According to reports, a gentleman identified as Safee Edwardson has come forward, claiming ownership of the land where the party’s headquarters is to be built. Edwardson expressed anger over what he calls an underhanded deal by CDC officials.

“The opposition party is proceeding with the groundbreaking without concluding anything with me,” Edwardson said. “They gave me $5,000 for land I’m selling for $300,000”, he alleges and laments.

But CDC Representative and head of the project, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa dismissed the claims during a Wednesday, October 15, interview with OK FM, stating there is no legal barrier to Saturday’s event.

“I have not received a writ from the court, preventing us from carrying out our groundbreaking on Saturday; he stated and encouraged partisans, supporters, and well-wishers to come out for the ceremony.

He also clarifies the status of the disputed land, stating that the gentleman claiming the land is a CDCian, and he was with him on Saturday. “The land they are breaking ground for on Saturday does not belong to him”, Cllr. Koffa, also a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, counters.

There are three separate adjacent lands that we wanted to acquire to expand our headquarters’ project, and he owns the one at the immediate back, he explains.

But interestingly, he says CDC is close to acquiring the other two, so even if Mr. Edwardson prevents the party from acquiring his, their groundbreaking and construction will still go on.

In a formal communication dated October 13, 2025, addressed to Liberia’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, the CDC officially announced plans to break ground for its new $1.6 million national headquarters.

The letter, signed by CDC National Chairman, Atty. Janga A. Kowo invites supporters and well-wishers to attend the ceremony, which he describes as a “great milestone” in the party’s post-demolition rebuilding efforts.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., opposite Greater Refuge Church in Congo Town.

The groundbreaking follows the August 23, 2025, demolition of CDC’s former headquarters, an action the party has repeatedly condemned as illegal and politically motivated. According to the party, their appeal over the matter is still pending before the Supreme Court of Liberia.

Partisans, supporters, and well-wishers of the once ruling party are expected to assemble to celebrate this great milestone in the aftermath of the illegal demolition, the CDC says in its letter. The party adds that their appeals are still pending at the Honorable Supreme Court, and they remain committed to peaceful reconstruction.

The CDC also reported looting of several properties, including a vehicle, during the demolition exercise.

The party informed the Minister of Justice of the looting of several properties, including a vehicle, during the eviction/demolition of its former headquarters.

The CDC says the new headquarters is not just a physical structure, but a symbol of resilience, unity, and strength, as it prepares for the 2029 general elections. The facility is part of a larger effort to establish CDC offices in all 15 counties of Liberia.

The project, primarily funded by contributions from members, is expected to be completed in 6 to 12 months.
