Jewel renews NPP-CDC marriage

Africa-Press – Liberia. Former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor says the National Patriotic Party (NPP) still remains committed to the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) despite rumors that the marriage has broken.

Former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor has reechoed the National Patriotic Party (NPP) marriage, with the former ruling Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).

Ms Taylor and former President George Weah led Liberia for six years under the Coalition for Democratic Change.

His comments might come as a deathblow to some conservative members of the NPP and perhaps bring to a close the rumor of a split between the two.

“This is not just a groundbreaking but a renewal of friendship,” former Vice President Taylor says.

She reechoed that the NPP remains a loyal partner of Mr. Weah’s Congress for Democratic Change.

“We have not just come to break ground, we are here, the NPP is here as part of the Coalition,” she states.

In May 2024, the NPP, through its chairman, Atty. George Sylvester Mulbah announced at a political rally that the party had cut ties with the CDC.

During that occasion, Chairman Mulbah stated, “The NPP will never subject itself to any political party that would treat it like a stepchild.”

That comment signaled the end of the relationship between the two parties, while opening space for future collaboration and revamping structures and efforts to regain state power.

However, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the CDC headquarters over the weekend, Ms Taylor, former Vice President and political leader of the NPP, reiterated the NPP’s commitment to the CDC.

“You will hear plenty of rumors that the NPP is here; the NPP is there. They say NPP this; NPP that, but I say NPP is here. We are part and parcel of this process and will make our full contribution.” She assured CDCians.

Madam Taylor reaffirmed her loyalty and donated US$5,000 towards the construction of the CDC’s new headquarters.

Politics is interesting and Ms Taylor is not ashamed to show where her interest lies despite seeming internal disagreement among NPP partisans where the once ruling party shows its weight for 2029.
