AFL Camp Grant Begins Road Rehabilitation in Nimba

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) stationed at Camp Grant Military Barrack in Sanniquellie, Nimba County has launched a major community road rehabilitation project as part of efforts to give back to local residents and strengthen peaceful coexistence between the military and civilians.

The initiative follows a goodwill gesture from ArcelorMittal Liberia, a leading mining company operating in the county.

The company’s support came after soldiers assigned at Camp Grant apprehended a large quantity of stolen fuel belonging to ArcelorMittal Liberia.

The prompt intervention of the army in recovering and returning the stolen fuel led the company to appreciate the troops through a tangible project that benefits the surrounding communities.

According to sources within the area, during a meeting with ArcelorMittal Liberia representatives, Camp Grant Commander Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel T. Kollie requested assistance to rehabilitate key community roads that had deteriorated over time and become nearly impassable, especially during the rainy season rather than the Commander asking for money to use it on his private business.

The company agreed, resulting in the launch of the 13-kilometer road rehabilitation project now underway across several neighborhoods in Sanniquellie.

Among the benefiting communities are the Barracks Community, Peace Community, Spoke Words Community and 99 Street, among others. Road rehabilitation work includes grading, backfilling, and compacting sections damaged by erosion to ensure safer and smoother movement for vehicles and pedestrians alike.

Speaking to reporters, several Sanniquellie residents expressed gratitude to both the AFL and ArcelorMittal Liberia for their partnership, which they believe will not only ease transportation but also foster unity and mutual understanding between the military and civilians.

The community members described the project as “a clear sign that the army cares about the people.”

They added that the bad road conditions had previously made it difficult for farmers and traders to transport goods to local marketplaces, particularly in remote neighborhoods.

Commander Kollie emphasized that the rehabilitation effort serves as a symbol of the AFL’s continued commitment to national development and civil-military cooperation. “The Armed Forces of Liberia is not only a defense institution but also a people-centered force that believes in serving the nation in diverse ways,” he said.

Residents have also noted improved interaction between soldiers and civilians in the area since the project began”.

Many say that initiatives like this reduce community tension and build trust, particularly in postwar Liberia, where strengthening peace and reconciliation remains a priority.

The ongoing road rehabilitation works are expected to be completed before the next rainy season, promising to improve access, safety, and overall development prospects for Sanniquellie and surrounding areas.
