Africa-Press – Liberia. Downtown FC finally broke their losing streak, clinching a crucial 2-0 victory over Black Man Warrior in the LFA First Division at the SKD Annexe. The win, powered by a superb brace from Myers Swen, brings a much-needed morale boost to the struggling club.
The match was played behind closed doors, a measure enforced by the LFA following fan unrest involving Black Man Warrior during their previous fixture against Paynesville FC.
Downtown Dominance in First Half
The opening half was dominated by the visitors, led by manager Sam Chebli. Downtown capitalized early when Black Man Warrior’s defense committed a mistake, allowing striker Myers Swen to pounce and slot home the opener in the 9th minute.
Swen was relentless, securing his brace and doubling the advantage just before the half-hour mark.
In the 29th minute, Hassan Grat-Hall delivered a precise cross, finding Swen unmarked who calmly finished to give Downtown a comfortable 2-0 lead at the interval. Swen’s performance kept Black Man Warrior goalkeeper Lamine Jarawa on edge throughout the game.
Second Half Response Fails to Materialize
Black Man Warrior showed slight improvement after the restart but created very little to trouble the Downtown defense. Benjamin Sarkoh came closest, forcing a smart save from Downtown keeper James Wolo, and a crucial clearance from Glay denied another attempt from close range. Despite the home side’s best efforts, Down Town’s defense held firm to maintain the clean sheet.
Table Implications and Manager’s Vision
While the three points are vital, Downtown FC remain at the bottom of the league table but are now just a point behind Black Man Warrior in 12th position, putting pressure on those just above the relegation zone.
Newly signed manager Sam Chebli, who was initially vexed by his team’s lack of performance on the touchline, later shared his satisfaction with the result.
“It is a huge victory for Downtown Football Club, and we hope this leads to steadfast consistency,” Chebli stated after the match. “I think Myers still has more to give; he is a young player, and working with these youngsters requires patience. He has a great future, and we are going to ensure he has great prospects.”
Chebli, known for his focus on execution, added a philosophical note: “A 2-0 win is a good prospect, but we have to maintain the wins. In maintaining it, it requires a lot of hard work, and we are going to keep working hard. We played an excellent game against the league leader Watanga FC, and I was more satisfied than winning today’s game with Black Man Warrior because I look at performance, not just results.”
