NLA Launches Nationwide Festive Program for Liberia’s Needy

Africa-Press – Liberia. The National Lottery Authority (NLA) on November 27, 2025, officially launched its first-ever nationwide Christmas donation program aimed at supporting persons with disabilities, orphanages, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups across all fifteen counties of Liberia.

The launch ceremony, held at the NLA headquarters, was presided over by Director General Hon. Peter L. Solo and attended by members of the Board of Directors, senior management, staff, representatives of disabled organizations, civil society actors, and members of the media. The donation exercise is scheduled to run throughout the 2025 festive season, reaching beneficiaries from Montserrado to Maryland, and beyond.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Solo described the initiative as a milestone in the Authority’s commitment to social responsibility. “This occasion marks a significant step in our effort to give back to the community and promote the welfare of our most vulnerable citizens,” he said. “The National Lottery Authority is not just about generating revenue; it is about making a positive impact on the lives of Liberians.”

Hon. Solo acknowledged the support of the Government of Liberia under President Joseph Nyumah Boakai and commended the NLA Board for guiding the institution’s corporate social responsibility initiatives. He emphasized the values of dignity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, declaring November 27 a “National Feeding Day for persons with disabilities, orphans, the homeless, and the elderly,” and called on institutions and citizens to uphold the true spirit of Christmas through love, generosity, and national solidarity.

Mr. Mohammed S. Kamara, Director of Social Welfare at the NLA, provided an overview of the program, noting that it is the first of its kind to cover all fifteen counties during the festive season. He highlighted that about 300 institutions, including disabled community organizations, orphanages, old folks’ homes, public welfare institutions, healthcare facilities, and charitable organizations, are registered in the NLA database as beneficiaries.

“The Christmas package includes 1,500 bags of 25kg rice, 2,295 cartons of Crown Vita, and 3,295 cartons of Argo cooking oil,” Kamara said. “Distribution will begin on November 28 and run through December 24, under the supervision of the NLA’s Department of Social Welfare. We ask all beneficiaries to remain patient as we implement this extensive nationwide exercise.”

Kamara also linked the program to Liberia’s broader national development framework, noting that the donation aligns with Section 6.1.2 of the 2014 Act establishing the NLA and supports the government’s ARREST Agenda for inclusive development.

Representing the Board of Directors, the Acting Chair and Co-Chair, speaking via remote link, praised the NLA leadership for the initiative, describing it as a historic achievement. “Supporting persons living with disabilities is a critical component of Liberia’s national development plan,” the Board representatives said. “This exercise reflects the government’s commitment to social protection and national solidarity.”

They further emphasized that disability could affect anyone and called for sustained support for persons living with disabilities, including capacity building, scholarships, and employment opportunities. Highlighting the NLA’s improved revenue performance, the Board noted that the initiative demonstrates the Authority’s ability to extend social support beyond Monrovia, with plans to expand medical aid distribution nationwide.

Rev. Peter B. Flomo, Executive Director of the National Union of Organizations of the Disabled (NUOD), lauded the NLA for putting “smiles on the faces” of persons with disabilities and orphans across the country. He acknowledged past challenges in relief distribution and called for improved coordination, accurate data collection, and needs-based distribution. Rev. Flomo also urged the NLA to explore employment opportunities for persons with disabilities within lottery programming and to support the renovation of the NUOD national headquarters.

Describing the donation as a new beginning, Rev. Flomo prayed for continued success and divine blessings on the leadership of the NLA.

The 2025 Christmas donation program represents a significant expansion of the NLA’s social welfare footprint. By reaching beneficiaries across all fifteen counties, the initiative underscores the Authority’s commitment to inclusivity, compassion, and national solidarity.

It also reinforces the NLA’s role as not only a revenue-generating institution, but a socially responsible entity committed to uplifting vulnerable Liberians during the festive season.
