Africa-Press – Liberia. The Executive Director for Campaigners Against Misinformation and Disinformation in Liberia (CAMDL), Taweh Johnson, has participated in a two-day media training on information integrity in Monrovia.
Held from November 24-25, the training was organized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in partnership with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and Code for Africa with support from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
The two-day training also equipped Liberian journalists with the knowledge and skills to promote information integrity, responsible journalism, and the effective countering of misinformation and disinformation, all in alignment with the goal of achieving the ECOWAS Vision 2025.
CAMDL expressed gratitude to H.E. Ambassador Josephine Nkrumah, ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, for extending the official invitation. At the conclusion of the training, Ambassador Nkrumah publicly commended CAMDL for its impactful contributions to promoting information integrity in Liberia.
Responding to the recognition, CAMDL stated, “We are thankful to Ambassador Nkrumah for her commendation and continued support. This acknowledgment strengthens our resolve to empower citizens on how to verify information and safeguard the integrity of Liberia’s information space. We are also grateful for this valuable learning opportunity.”
Highlighting a growing challenge, CAMDL Executive Director Taweh Johnson noted the role of technology in spreading false information. “Generative artificial intelligence is incredibly accelerating the spread of misinformation and disinformation. This training is timely because it equips participants with skills and online tools to detect AI-generated content,” Johnson said.
He further emphasized CAMDL’s willingness to collaborate with ECOWAS and other partners to enhance media and digital literacy nationwide. “We are ready to work with ECOWAS and stakeholders to carry out training programs that empower citizens to counter misinformation and disinformation in Liberia. The spread of false information threatens peace, security, democracy, governance, and development in our country,” he added.
The training is part of a broader regional initiative by ECOWAS and its partners to strengthen information integrity, media literacy, and responsible journalism across West Africa, ensuring citizens can navigate the digital information landscape safely and responsibly.
CAMDL reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to empowering Liberians, protecting the flow of accurate information, and promoting accountability and trust in public discourse.
