Africa-Press – Liberia. The administration of the Bong County Technical College (BCTC), located in Gbarnga, Bong County, has placed over 116 students on academic probation for poor performance, primarily from the Health Sciences and Information Technology Departments carrying huge numbers of the students, while few came from Agriculture, Education and Mining Department.
This action underscores the institution’s commitment to maintaining academic standards and encouraging student excellence.
In addition to the probation, a smaller number of students have faced semester suspensions following consistent underperformance. The college administration described these measures as necessary to uphold quality education and ensure students meet the institution’s rigorous academic requirements.
Despite these challenges, approximately 285 students have been commended by the administration for outstanding academic achievements.
The recognition of high-performing students aims to motivate others to improve their efforts and take their studies seriously.
The probation process is a routine practice at BCTC, designed not only as a consequence for poor results but more importantly as a catalyst to inspire students to elevate their academic commitments.
Many students have expressed support for the administration’s decision, acknowledging that it encourages a more focused and competitive academic environment.
Dr. Alfredson W. Talkerweyah Sr., President of Bong County Technical College, has been instrumental in driving reforms since his appointment by the government under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
Under his leadership, the college has expanded its academic offerings by inaugurating new departments such as Business, Public Administration, Management and Economics.
These initiatives reflect a broader vision to transform BCTC into a comprehensive institution that addresses diverse educational needs.
Moreover, ongoing major renovations across the campus are modernizing facilities to provide a more conducive learning environment.
Dr. Talkerweyah Sr. has expressed his commitment to continuing these improvements with the goal of positioning BCTC as one of the leading community colleges nationwide.
“The goal is not just to discipline but to build a culture of academic excellence where every student is prepared to succeed,” Dr. Talkerweyah Sr. said.
He added that the college’s strategic plans include further expanding academic programs and infrastructure to accommodate growing student enrollment and evolving industry demands. With these decisive actions and investments, Bong County Technical College aims to not only raise academic standards but also enhance its reputation as a beacon of quality technical education in Liberia.
