Africa-Press – Liberia. The Joseph N. Boakai Foundation has announced plans to hold a memorial service in honor of Amb. Sylvester M. Grigsby, Liberia’s former Minister of State for Presidential Affairs and Chief of Staff to the President.

Grigsby, a distinguished public servant who dedicated decades of his life to national service, passed away on 9 August 2025 in Houston, Texas, USA, following a protracted illness. He was subsequently laid to rest in the United States.

Before his return to government as Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Grigsby served as Executive Director of the Joseph N. Boakai Foundation, where he worked to advance the institution’s humanitarian and community development mission.

The JNB Foundation, has set December 7, 2025, for the memorial service, which will be held at the St. Trowen Nagbe United Methodist Church in Sinkor, Monrovia.

Following his death, many of Grigsby’s colleagues and associates had expressed the desire for his remains to be brought home for burial. However, his family opted to have him interred in the United States. Family sources say the memorial in Monrovia will provide an opportunity for friends, relatives, and admirers to gather and pay tribute to a man whose life and service touched many.

At his funeral in August, President Joseph N. Boakai—speaking through a representative—described Grigsby as a statesman whose legacy was marked by integrity, humility, and exceptional commitment to his country.

“Grigsby’s life was one of impact, integrity, and quiet greatness,” President Boakai said. “You can be proud of who he was—not only for what he did for his family but for his country. Although a few may have misunderstood him, many recognized his patriotism, dedication, and commitment to excellence.”

The upcoming memorial service is expected to draw a large gathering of government officials, diplomats, civil society representatives, and ordinary citizens who knew or were touched by the work of the late statesman.
