Africa-Press – Liberia. The Eta Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, over the weekend, commemorated its 12th Annual Scholarship & Awards Ball, honoring prominent individuals for exemplary leadership, dedicated service, and unwavering commitment to the fraternity’s ideals of leadership, service, scholarship, and advocacy.
In his opening remarks, Bro. Ambassador B. Elias Shoniyin, President of the Eta Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Republic of Liberia, extended warm fraternal greetings to honored guests, award recipients, scholars, partners, and brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha in Liberia and around the world.
He noted that this year’s celebration was especially meaningful as the chapter dedicated the program to the cherished memory of their beloved Brother, John Togbakolie Woods (1938–2025), whom he described as a true Alpha man, patriot, educator, Christian, and public servant.
Since its establishment in 1958, Bro. Shoniyin said Eta Epsilon Lambda has stood as a pillar of leadership and upliftment in Liberia. He highlighted the chapter’s growing brotherhood, strengthened by the reactivation of members and the opening of its first official chapter office and secretariat in Monrovia, which he said reflects a renewed era of purpose, vision, and impact.
“Through hallmark initiatives such as My Brother’s Keeper, the Alpha Leadership Academy, Alpha House Project, and our Scholarship Program, we continue to invest in the future of Liberia, supporting young minds, empowering scholars, mentoring future leaders, and responding to the needs of our communities,” he pointed out.
He further emphasized the fraternity’s active role in national development, noting, “From mobilizing against drug abuse to expanding youth leadership and hosting national and international engagements, we have proven that Alpha men do not stand on the sidelines; we lead from the front.”
According to him, the event is more than a celebration; it is a statement of hope and a declaration that Liberia’s best days are still ahead. He added that each scholarship awarded, each mentee empowered, and each life transformed represents a step closer to the nation the organization believes in, a nation grounded in peace, opportunity, justice, and shared responsibility.
The 2025 Alpha Awards recognized individuals whose contributions have advanced the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha and positively impacted Liberia and the global community, celebrating excellence and adherence to the fraternity’s founding principles.
Awardees included Ambassador George W. Wallace Jr., Alpha Award of Honor; T. Nelson Williams II, ED, Alpha Award of Merit; Dr. Puchu Leona Bernard and Dr. Frank Glover, Alpha Lifetime Achievement Awards; Sheikh Ali Krayee, Alpha Leadership Award; and Brother Nathaniel E. Kevin, A.D.D., Alpha Leadership Award.
Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Ambassador George W. Wallace Jr. said recognizing the honorees was significant not only to Alpha but also to the nation and to Liberia, and he expressed gratitude for the recognition of their contributions to the state and its people.
“To Alpha, what you have been doing through these years is appreciated, not only in the Republic of Liberia but around the world. That people have recognized this organization’s contributions, served the nation, and made people know that they are recognized and accepted to serve,” Ambassador Wallace said, stressing that the awards would go a long way and never be forgotten.
Under the theme “Pillars of Promise: Investing in Tomorrow’s Leaders,” the ceremony took place at Paynesville City Hall on Friday, January 30, 2026, drawing a diverse audience of government officials, professionals, scholars, distinguished guests, families, and loved ones in a vibrant celebration of achievement.
During the program, Joseph Nyuma Boakai Jr. led the recognition of partners and sponsors, highlighting the fraternity’s role in nurturing leadership and building pathways to success. He said the awarding of scholarships aligns with Alpha Phi Alpha’s commitment to true leadership development, academic excellence, and community upliftment.
“Through your meaningful support, we were able to invest in Liberia and prepare the next generation with the tools to lead and serve,” he told the audience.
Expressing gratitude to partners and supporters, Boakai Jr. added that the fraternity looks forward to sustaining and strengthening partnerships in the future, as Alpha Phi Alpha continues to promote leadership and empower the next generation of Liberians.
