Africa-Press – Liberia. Representative Bernard Blue Benson of Electoral District #17, Montserrado County, has formally written government authorities seeking clarification on the procedures, oversight, and accountability mechanisms governing salary tax withholding for members of the House of Representatives and their staff.
In his communication, Rep. Benson raised concerns about transparency, consistency, and accountability in the application of salary tax deductions administered by offices responsible for payroll management and revenue collection.
The inquiry, he noted, is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with national tax laws while safeguarding the rights and obligations of lawmakers and legislative employees.
According to the letter, Rep. Benson requested detailed information on the legal framework guiding salary tax withholding for elected representatives and staff of the Legislature. He specifically sought clarification on how withholding rates are determined, which institutions are responsible for making deductions and remitting taxes, and the internal controls in place to ensure that deducted amounts are accurately transferred to the Government of Liberia.
The lawmaker further emphasized the need for effective oversight mechanisms that allow legislators to verify that salary deductions are correctly calculated and properly documented.
“Clear procedures and accessible records are essential not only for personal accountability but also for strengthening public confidence in the management of public funds,” the communication stated.
Rep. Benson also raised concerns about inter-agency coordination, particularly between the Legislature’s administrative offices and national revenue authorities. He requested information on existing reporting systems, audit processes, and reconciliation measures designed to prevent discrepancies or delays in tax remittances.
The move is being viewed as part of a broader push within the Legislature to improve financial governance and institutional transparency.
By seeking clarity on salary tax withholding practices, Rep. Benson aligns with ongoing national efforts to strengthen fiscal compliance and promote integrity across public institutions.
The communication calls on the relevant offices to provide a timely and comprehensive response, including policy documents, guidelines, and statutory references governing salary tax withholding for lawmakers and their staff.
Rep. Benson said the information would help Representatives better understand their financial obligations and support informed discussions on possible administrative or legislative reforms, if necessary.
